Mandan's Kari Hanson and Bismarck's Natalie Brunner duked it out for most of the spoils in North Dakota Class A girls basketball this season, most importantly the state title.

Both were rewarded for their hard work as they were among five players choses first-team all-state. Williston senior Sarah Leer joins the juniors.

Hanson averaged 14.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game for the Braves.

"She's kind of like the glue that kept us together," Mandan coach Greg Amundson said.

Brunner averaged 19.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.2 steals per game for the Demons.

"She's got a great ability to create shots on her own," Bismarck coach Rich Hovland said.

The Coyotes' Leer averaged 15.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. She hit 49.4 percent of her 3-pointers.

20 years ago (1989): Scott Reichenberger and Laurie Neshemn won their overall divisoins in the 10-kilometer Thanks for Giving Family Road Race at Sertoma Park.

Reichenberger won the men's division in a time of 33 minutes, 4 seconds. Neshem led the women with a time of 43:11.

In the 5K run, William Fleck wont he men's division with a time of 16:46 and Chris O'Connor was the top woman finisher in 22:31.

50 years ago (1959): STRASBURG - The Strasburg Clippers kicked off the 1959-60 basketball season with a 53-28 victory over the Pollock Bulldogs.

Forward Ron Geffre paced Strasburg with 13, followed by center Allen Nieuwsma with 11, guard Mike Burga with nine and forward Roy Senger with eight.

Pollock was paced by Ken Brooks, brother of Larry Brooks, who played with the Clippers last year, with seven points.
