GRAND FORKS - Minot's Dagny Knutson shattered one national high school record and set a second during preliminaries Friday at the state girls swimming meet.

The 17-year-old senior clocked in at 1:53.82 in the 200 individual medley. That was 2.63 seconds faster than the old mark, set by Mary Beck in 2008. Knutson, who is gunning for her fifth state title in the IM, obliterated her own state record in the event (1:58.58), which she set in 2007.

Knutson wasn't far off Julia Schmit's national record - not for high schoolers, but all women - of 1:52.79.

In her other individual event, the 100 freestyle, Knutson swam a 48.15. That bettered her own national high school record of 48.33. Knutson set that mark swimming the lead leg of Minot's 400 free relay team at last year's state meet.

Knutson wasn't the only record setter. Fargo Shanley's Lexie Halberstadt was the top qualifier in the 50 free. Her time of 23.54 lowered her own state mark by .23 seconds.

Century's Cassie Walth was second in 23.90 and Mandan's Alexis Hogan third in 24.00.

Halberstadt also had the fastest prelim time (56.41) in the 100 butterfly.

Ali Church of Grand Forks was also the fastest qualifier in two events, the 200 and 500 free. Century's Kalee Kemmesat was second in both.

The only local swimmer who will go into today's finals as a top seed is Century's Emily Smallbeck. The sophomore cut nearly three seconds off her qualifying time in the 100 backstroke. She finished the event in 59.80, .12 seconds faster than West Region champion Kaitlin Bolinske of Williston.

Sadie Miller of the Coyotes was the top qualifier in the 100 breaststroke.

Today's events begin with diving semifinals at 11 a.m., with swimming and diving finals starting at 1:30 p.m. Minot will be trying to extend its run of consecutive state championships to seven, while Knutson looks to add to her career total of 14 individual titles.
