University of Mary quarterback Henry Lau has found a reliable target in the receiving corp.
Junior Terry Newsome has raised some eyebrows in his first two games with the Marauders. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder from San Jose, Calif., hauled in five passes for 128 yards and a touchdown on Sept. 5 in a win against Upper Iowa.
Newsome had five grabs for 69 yards and a 14-yard score in a 35-14 Northern Sun loss to No. 8-ranked MSU-Mankato on Saturday in college football action.
"He's an explosive weapon,"said Lau, who completed 23 of 45 passes for 201 yards on Saturday. "He knows how to get open, and once he gets open he knows how to make moves. You can hit him deep, and you can run quick little plays. He has jukes and makes some big plays."
Newsome is the slot receiver in U-Mary's spread offense.
"If Henry sees me, which he is a pretty good quarterback and sees a lot of openings, I just catch the ball and try to make a play,"Newsome said. "Our receivers are pretty good, and they help me out by pushing the field and letting me come underneath."
Melland gets
call from 49ers
Former U-Mary standout linebacker Shawn Melland flies to San Francisco today and will workout with the 49ers on Tuesday.
Melland, who finished his career last season, got looks from several teams before the NFL Draft. San Francisco showing the most interest, Melland said.
The Watford City native didn't get signed by an NFL team, but has been staying in shape just incase a team wanted to bring him in for a workout.
"I kept after it just because I enjoy training and stuff,"Melland said. "It's a good thing I didn't stop. They kept in contact me over the summer, and that was some inspiration to stay in the gym and stay ready. I'm glad I stayed in shape."
Melland said he was contacted by the 49ers on Draft Day. He understood that they were going to sign him, but it didn't pan out. Melland didn't let himself get discouraged.
"I thought it was over and done with since all the cuts were made," Melland said. "I tried to mentally move on, but there was always a part of me that knew I could get that phone call."
Melland, who is engaged to be married inJanuary, worked one day for a Bismarck utility construction company before he got the call from the 49ers.
"They knew situation when I came in there that if I got an opportunity to go to the NFLI would leave,"he said. "I'm kind of on hold, but hopefully I don't have to go back. Hopefully I get signed and stay down there."
Reid accepts penalty
U-Mary defensive lineman EJ Reid stuffed MSUM running back Julian Phipps for an 8-yard loss in the second quarter.
Reid stood up and raised his hands to the home crowd at the Community Bowl and drew an unsportsmanlike penalty for taunting.
Reid, a 6-2, 320-pound senior from Laie, Hawaii, indicated that he just got caught up in the moment.
"I was excited to make a play,"he said. "Next time I need to act like I've been there before. Iwould never disrespect anybody. I was just pumping up the crowd."
U-Mary coach Myron Schulz didn't dispute the call.
"That's the rule, and I like that rule,"Schulz said. "I think it's disrespectful to the game when you bring attention to yourself. There's a whole bunch of people out there working hard."
Loads of laundry
Speaking of penalties, both teams were flagged for their share.
MSUM was called for nine penalties for 99 yards. U-Mary had 10 for 85 yards.
Schulz said for the Marauders to beat a nationally-ranked team, 10 infractions are too much.
"We can't have it," Schulz said. "We have to knock it off."
This and that
n Both of U-Mary's losses this season have come from teams ranked in the top 10 the week of the game Chadron State and MSU-Mankato.
n U-Mary used a trick play during its second drive that Schulz called a "swing gate play," which resulted in a 21-yard rushing pick up from Newsome. "When we play a team like Mankato, we look deep into (the bag of tricks)," Schulz said.
n Linebacker Caleb Thompson and offensive lineman Mike Kelly both left the contest in the second half with injuries.
n The Marauders are still struggling to score in the opening quarter. U-Mary has scored seven points in the opening stanza in three games this season. The Marauders scored just 17 points in the first quarter in 11 games last season.
n The Marauders picked up two sacks against MSUM. Joey Olsen got one sack and Ryan Nelson and Willie Wenschlag combined for one. The Marauders picked up two sacks against MSUM. Joey Olsen got one sack and Ryan Nelson and Willie Wenschlag combined for one.
