The University of Mary defense held the MSU-Mankato run game in check in the first half.
The No. 8-ranked Mavericks looked to the arm of quarterback Steve Pachan to get things going in a 35-14 victory over the Marauders in Northern Sun college football action at the Bismarck Community Bowl.
Pachan connected with Chris Nowlin for a 41-yard touchdown strike on fourth-and-12 with eight seconds remaining in the first half. Sam Brockshus added the PAT kick to tie the game at 7.
The score capped a seven-play drive that covered 79 yards in 1:33.
"We decided to get our pass game going," said Pachan, a 6-foot-1, 203-pound junior from Pittsburg, Calif. "We were looking for the deep out. We had to get something going. I saw (Nowlin's) hand up, and I just threw it to him."
The touchdown led to 28 unanswered points by the Mavericks, including the first drive of the second half that Pachan scored from a yard out.
The Mavericks were 0-for-9 on third-down and fourth-down conversions before the big play near halftime.
"We knew we had to get some type of momentum on our side,"Pachan said. "Things weren't going well for us in the first half, and we had to get something to spark us. Our offensive line did a good job. You can't win unless you have a good offensive line."
Pachan completed 14 of 24 for 322 yards. He threw two touchdowns to Nowlin and one to Jake Aberg.
The strike to Aberg was the first play of the drive at 9:00 of the third quarter to put the Mavericks up 21-7. Pachan found Aberg open on the left side of the field. That drive, according to U-Mary head coach Myron Schulz, took the wind out of the Marauders' sails.
"It was a bootleg," Schulz said. "The guy (Pachan) faked the ball to a running back, and they rolled it the other way and threw to the other back (Aberg). It's a borderline trick play, and they hit it. They had everything in their favor a two touchdown lead and the momentum."
Nowlin finished with 150 yards on six receptions.
Ernest Walker added the Mavericks' final touchdown. Walker, a 5-10, 252-pound fullback, led the Mavericks in rushing with 69 yards on 12 carries.
The Mavericks rolled up 463 yards of total offense. MSUM controlled the second half, gaining 260 yards to U-Mary's 64.
"They are hard to pressure because they keep a bunch of guys in,"Schulz said. "They are a running team. They throw the ball well, but they throw it well because they stick it down your throat. Their schemes help protect their quarterback."
After a scoreless first quarter, U-Mary struck first with a nine-play, 68-yard drive that took 4:05 off the clock. Wide receiver Tyler Steffan capped off the drive with a 12-yard pass to the right side of the end zone from Henry Lau. Rett Thibodeaux added the PAT to give U-Mary a 7-0 lead at 5:57 of the second quarter.
The Marauders didn't score again until 12:39 of the fourth quarter when wide receiver Terry Newsome caught a 14-yard strike from Lau.
Lau completed 23 of 45 passes for 201 yards. The senior also threw two picks.
Jamal Lomax led the Marauders in rushing with 45 yards on 12 carries.
Newsome, who also had a touchdown last week, had five grabs for 69 yards.
"He is coming along,"Schulz said. "He's a nice little player. He's fitting into our system. We found another weapon out there."
The Marauders finished with 267 total yards.
Xavaier Cleveland led U-Mary defensively with 11 tackles, including 2½ for a loss.
