The University of Mary offense sputtered last week in a loss to No. 10-ranked Chadron State.

There was no chugging on Saturday at the Bismarck Community Bowl against the Upper Iowa Peacocks in Northern Sun football action.

The U-Mary Marauders recorded a 48-31 victory with 570 yards of total offense.

U-Mary coach Myron Schulz picked up his 80th career win.

"We got back to the basics,"U-Mary quarterback Henry Lau said. "Last week we had a lot of mistakes. We missed some assignments and all that. But this week we executed. That's the difference in football. The offensive line did an excellent job."

Lau finished with a big day, completing 22 of 40 passes for 369 yards and five touchdowns.

Lau spread it around, completing passes to nine different people.

"We did a better job executing," said Lau, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior from Menomonee Falls, Wis. "They did a lot better job executing their routes. Our egos weren't bruised after last week. We had to focus toward this week and forget last week."

Receiver Terry Newsome led the Marauders with five catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. Brady Martin had a pair of touchdowns and Tyler Steffan and Avan Leday both hauled in a pair of touchdown passes.

Lau benefitted from a steady rushing attack. Running back Jamal Lomax carried the ball 29 times for 199 yards.

Lomax's 50-yard touchdown run started a second-half scoring outburst. Lomax's score gave the Marauders a 27-24 lead at 11:08 an advantage the Marauders did not relinquish.

U-Mary (1-0 NSIC, 1-1 overall) outscored the Peacocks 28-7 in the second half.

"We quit being cute," U-Mary coach Myron Schulz said of the second-half outburst. "… We ran our best play against their call. We figured out they weren't disguising. They were showing us what they ran. We quit being cute and started going back to our basic calls.

"The run game helped us this week," Schulz added. "It helped us take time off the clock. Both teams were no-huddle. They couldn't just play a Cover 2."

Lomax, a 5-8, 190-pound junior, did the bulk of his damage in the second half, running for 148 yards after intermission, including 94 in the fourth quarter.

"Their running game was the difference,"Upper Iowa coach Tom Shea said. "Lomax is a good back. He's low to the ground and has a good center of gravity."

The Peacocks led 24-20 at halftime. Jordan Otdoerfer took the opening kickoff 86 yards, which helped set up his 3-yard score on a pass from Ben Curran.

Upper Iowa (0-1 NSIC, 1-1 overall) rolled up 427 yards of offense with 345 yards coming through the air. Curran completed 29 of 42 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns.

Otdoerfer led Upper Iowa in rushing with 41 yards on 12 carries. The 5-8, 190-pound sophomore finished with 214 all-purpose yards.

The Marauders play host to MSU-Mankato this Saturday in NSIC action.
