From 1D: The New Jersey Devils was the NHL team that began its franchise as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974. The franchise spent only two seasons as the Scouts before moving to Colorado in 1976. Smith edged Chuck Boyd-Snee 5 and 3 to succeed George Cram Jr. as the twin cities' champion.

Roger McKinnon was medalist with a one-over-par 71.

Smith beat McKinnon, Jim Fowler and Ed Schmidt, while Boyd-Snee beat Loyd Orser, Al Shriner and Pat Morrissey.
