Thirteen unlucky?

Pish posh.

Bismarck's boys easily rolled to their 13th WesternDakota Association cross country title Tuesday at Mandan Municipal Golf Course .

The Demons put six runners in the top dozen en route to 23 points. BHS thus built a sizeable advantage over runner-up Williston, which totaled 82.

BHSlikewise dominated the girls' competition. All five Demon counters placed in the top dozen as Bismarck outpaced runner-up Century 39-77.

Tuesday's WDA crown was the fourth in a row for the BHSboys. The girls led the pack for the third time in four years.

As he has done all year, senior Joash Osoro got the Demon boys team off on the right foot by taking individual honors. He covered the 5-kilometer course in 15:44, outdistancing teammate and runner-up DevinHuizenga by 18 seconds. Bismarck's other counters were Chrstian Brown Otter, third; JoshNuss, sixth; and Brandon Barnes, 11th.

Osoro left the field behind in the second mile, opening a 20-yard lead. By the end of the race he had quadrupled that cushion.

While happy with the win, Osoro said he didn't feel he had the sharpness he displayed three weeks earlier in winning the Roy Griak meet inMinneapolis.

"We train through this. We're getting ready for next week," he said pointing to the state meet. "… Not a lot of the guys were jacked up. Next week we hope to be jacked up."

Sophomore Brecca Wahlund of Minot ran away from the field in the second half of the race to win the 4K girls race in 15:09. Dakota Wolf of Dickinson finished 11 seconds back in 15:20.

Taylor Pintar paced Bismarck, taking third in 15:24. Alexa Wachter placed fourth for the Demons with LindsayAchtenberg ninth, SarahFeeney 11th and Shanice Lambert 12th.

Wahlund and Wolf were dead even at the first mile, but Wahlund opened a 50-yard gap in the second mile.

"My goal was to work that second half and see what happened," Wahlund said. "… I just wanted to go out with the front of the pack and push it the second half."

Wahlund, who notched her third win of the season, said she expected to have her hands full onTuesday.

"I knew there were going to be people with me. … Iknew it would be a tough race,"she said.

Osoro was a repeat champion.

Wahlund moved up from a runner-up finish in 2007.

DarrellAnderson, who shares Bismarckboys coaching duties with Dave Zittleman, was happy with the win, but even more pleased with the way the Demons captured the crown.

"I thought we competed really well. We put six in the top 12 and that's what we wanted to do as a team," Anderson said. "… We had a new fifth runner (junior BrandonBarnes)for the first time all year and that's always nice to see. It shows how important they all are."

Bismarckgirls coachScott Reichenberger said his team achieved one goal and set the table for another on Tuesday.

"This was objective No. 1 and obviously the next objective is the state meet," he said. "… We had eight in the top 20 and our ninth was 21st. That's nice grouping. We're happy with it. We're getting better every meet."

Bismarck nearly cornered the market on individual awards.

Brad Lies of Century was named the WDAboys coach of the year.

Reichenberger and Century's Julie Stavn shared girls coaching honors.

Osoro and Huizenga split WDAsenior boys athlete honors with Dickinson's Dakota Wolf and Feeney sharing the girls award.
