From 1D: Richard Petty was the 1959 NASCAR Rookie of the Year. He had six top-five and nine top-ten finishes. He drove his for father Lee. It was the second Rookie of the Year award that was presented. Shorty Rollins won the inaugural award in 1958. Petty would go on to win seven titles in his career.

10 years ago (1999): Bismarck's Steve Riedinger shot an 82 in the first round and an 86 in the second round, leaving him 28 shots behind the leader in the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic golf tournament at Houston's Northgate Country Club.

Riedinger missed the cut, while Fargo's Josh Persons made the cut.

Persons was tied for second after a first-round 71, but fell with a second-round 81. He is 12 shots off the lead.

50 years ago (1959): Bismarck Big Boy, Burleigh-Grant-Morton amateur baseball league chmpion, will play in the state amateur tournament in Jamestown this weekend.
