The Dakota Wizards' impact on the D-League was made clear again Tuesday as two of the franchise's current players and four former standouts were among the 20 players named to the league's all-star rosters.
Carlos Powell, Dakota's leading scorer, and Rod Benson, the D-League's leading rebounder, were chosen from this year's club. Wizards alumni selected to play in the game include Kasib Powell of the Sioux Falls Skyforce and three Colorado 14ers, Billy Thomas, Eddie Gill and Kaniel Dickens.
Players were chosen by a combination of input from coaches and league officials and fan voting. The all-star game is scheduled for Feb. 16 in New Orleans as part of the NBA all-star weekend festivities.
"We're really happy and proud for Carlos and Rod," Wizards coach Duane Ticknor said. "We're sure they'll represent us well."
Powell is averaging 22.3 points per game and entering Tuesday's games was ranked fourth in the league in scoring. The second overall pick in this year's D-League's draft, Powell is also averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.
Benson, in his second year with the Wizards, is averaging 12.7 points and 12.1 rebounds a night.
Heading into Tuesday's action Kasib Powell was averaging 20.1 points and 6.0 rebounds a night while spurring the Skyforce to a six-game winning streak.
Gill was averaging 22.0 points per game, fifth in the league, and 5.3 rebounds. Gill was contributing 17.9 points and 7.9 assists, third in the league. Thomas was averaging 14.7 points per game.
Because the D-League has three divisions, players are being divided into Blue and Red teams. Both Powell and Benson will play for the Blue team, coached by Dan Panaggio of the Los Angeles D-Fenders. The former Wizards are all on the Red squad, which will be coached by Idaho's Bryan Gates.
Hall of Famers Lenny Wilkens and Rick Barry will serve as honorary captains, Wilkens for the Blue team, Barry for the Red team.
