Next spring will have a different feel to it for Troy Olson.
It will be the first time in more than 20 years Olson won't spend extensive time at the ballpark. Olson resigned from his Bismarck High baseball head coaching position on Friday.
He has coached baseball at every level and held the BHS position since 1994.
"It will be tough not going to the yard in some way, shape or form,"Olson said. "I didn't decide this over-night. It's been a long time coming."
Olson will continue to teach marketing at Century and coach its boys hockey team, a position he has held since 2005.
Olson cited that coaching two sports got to be too much. He is also married with four children.
"Coaching two sports is a lot, and we will have a freshman next year,"Olson said. "I've been doing baseball for a long time. I want to give it a shot and see how hockey turns out."
Olson, a 1987 graduate of Century, finishes his baseball coaching career with a 249-209-1 record. He coached the Demons to regional championships in 2001 and 2003. The Demons were crowned state champs in 2003 and finished as runner-up in 2005.
"I have a lot of good memories,"Olson said. "When I started out I got to see baseball evolve from a club sport to a sanctioned sport. There was the year we won a title. There are the teams that had to fight tooth and nail to finish .500, and I'm as proud of those teams."
Olson was selected the West Region coach of the year in 2001, '03 and '07. He was named state coach of the year in 2001 and '03.
Olson played Legion baseball for the Governors during the 1986-87 seasons. He also played hockey for Century from 1984-87.
Olson went on to play hockey for two years at Minnesota-Crookston and baseball at the University of North Dakota. He received his college degree from UND.
