Trivia answer
From 1D: On the night known as "The Night of Speed," the world record of 10 seconds for the 100-meter dash is broken by three men and tied by seven others in a span of 2½ hours at the AAU Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Jim Hines wins the first semifinal in a tight finish with Ronny Ray Smith, becoming the first man to break the 10-second barrier. Both runners are credited with a time of 9.9 seconds. Charlie Greene wins the second semifinals and then ties Hines' 9.9 record in the final.

10 years ago (1999): The question is merely formality: Are you Doug Swenson?
Swenson's improbably tall (6-foot-10) and impossibly thin (210 pounds) frame is instantly recognizable, even to those who have never seen the former Halliday and Bismarck State College star play.
Swenson returned to his old stomping grounds, a three-day stopover in North Dakota during what has been perhaps the most exciting summer of his life. His trip home was sandwiched between a workout with the Chicago Bulls and an upcoming look from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
"The Bulls said they like my skill level, but that I need a few years for my body to mature," said Swenson, who also played at Creighton. "They'd like me to put on at least 20 pounds."
20 years ago (1989): Lee Demarais wants to keep the streak intact as long as he's eligible on the Bismarck American Legion baseball team.
"We never lose to Mandan. That's the Governors' Rule," said Demarais, who drove in six runs in a sterling offensive display as the Governors topped Mandan 14-11.
It marked the second straight victory this season by the Governors over the Chiefs and the 24th straight since 1984.
Demarais finished 4-for-5 with a two-run home run. Rich Schulz also smacked a two-run homer for the winners.
Jason Meyhoff went 3-for-5 with a two-run double for Mandan.
50 years ago (1959): Nicola's slugged its way to a 26-6 win over Capital Commercial College in city softball league action.
Nicola's scored in each inning in rolling to its fifth straight win. Dave Hummel, the league's leading hitter, set the pace with four hits, including a home run. Nicola's hit four home runs in all.
