On Friday, West Fargo and Grand Forks Red River knocked Bismarck and Century from the ranks of the unbeaten at the Bismarck-Century Invitational volleyball tournament.
Saturday they switched opponents and the tournament hosts returned the favor, CHS topping Red River and BHS besting West Fargo.
In fact the tournament's name could have referred to not just the site, but the action on the court, as the Demons and Patriots each went 4-0 n the second day of the tournament.
"That was a great day," Century coach Jeni Walsh said.
All four schools went 6-1 on the weekend, setting themselves as the teams to beat in their respective regions.
"We have things to improve on, which is the point of this tournament," BHS setter KaSara Rudolph said. "But (Friday) we were up and down a lot. Today we played on a pretty even level, which helped us a lot."
The highlight of the day for Bismarck was hard-fought 25-20, 19-25, 15-13 victory over Red River.
"We had good passes, which keys our offense," said Rudolph, who had 86 assists on the day. "Everything went smoothly."
Twila Moser led the Bismarck with 30 kills, and Annie Assel had 26. The Demons were also active on the other end, with Kaitlyn Sturlaugson recording 50 digs and Liz Assel 47.
"Really across the board, all the players did a nice job stepping in and playing their roles,"BHS coach Lisa Krom said. "I definitely have a deeper bench that I can go to this year."
Century blitzed its competition not only winning all four of its matches, but all 12 of its games. Over the course of two days Century won 19 of 21 games, the best mark in the tournament.
Century's biggest victory was a 25-17, 25-11, 15-10 win over West Fargo.
The Patriots showed their experience with smooth teamwork. Carli Peterson had 31 kills, with Tricia Sorensen chipping in 19 and Alexis Jacobs 17. Erika Jossart had 61 digs and 10 aces, while Hailee Walsh racked up 78 assists.
"I thought Erika and Hailee had a really good tournament," coach Walsh said. "The more consistent they are, the more effective our hitters are going to be."
Hailee Walsh said having played together for so long gives the Patriots a big edge, especially early in the season.
"We played really well together as a team," Walsh said. "We're pretty close right now, and I hope it keeps going."
Saturday turned out to be a mixed bag for St. Mary's, which split its four contests to go 3-4 on the tournament. The Saints downed Wahpeton and Devils Lake while falling to ValleyCity and West Fargo.
The Saints let one slip away against the Hi-Liners, winning the first game but dropping the second 26-24.
"Should we have won a few more games? Yeah," Saints coach Kari Leier said."We gave away some points. This tournament is just kind of our learning experience."
Leier singled out Laura Maddock, who had 16 kills and eight digs, for praise. Jancie Eisenbarth had 15 kills and nine digs.
Mandan had less reason for optimism. After taking two of three on Friday, the Braves lost all four of their matches on Saturday.
"We kept looking for a leader to step up and take control, and we really didn't have anyone do that today," Mandan coach Jackie Wandy said.
The Braves did get 21 kills from Brittaney Zander and 102 digs from KayCee Gustafson.
