Aaron Janz saw a pitch he had hoped for.

Then he promptly sent it out of Mandan's Memorial Ballpark.

Janz's one-out two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning powered the Mandan A's to a 3-1 Class B Section 8 win over the Beulah Cyclones on Tuesday night in the first game of a doubleheader.

Janz fell behind in the count 0-2 after teammate Brett Bryan opened the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Dwight Mack. He then took a swing at a high fastball from Beulah starter Levi Lawson and deposited it beyond the 18-foot screen fence in left field.

"(Lawson) left a fastball up. It was a great pitch to hit," Janz said. "I was down (in the count) and I was looking for anything close. I knew it was gone as soon as I hit it. It felt that good."

It was Janz's seventh home run of the season.

"There's a reason why Aaron bats in the number four spot," A's coach Jake Kincaid said. "He's our power guy. He's someone who can bring in the runs. The (potential) winning run in scoring position and one out. You want your number four guy at the plate in situations like that. He came through for us."

The A's later made it a sweep with another last at-bat win, 5-4. Jordy Wenstrom's bases-loaded single with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh broke a 4-4 tie and sent the A's to their 21st win in 22 games.

The pitch Janz hit for a home run was one of the few mistakes Lawson made in six-plus innings. The Beulah left-hander allowed just four hits, walked four and struck out seven through six frames.

"(Lawson) did a great job keeping us off balance," Janz said. "He has a good lefty curve and this was the first time we had seen him this year. He's a good solid pitcher. We were pretty fortunate tonight."

The A's countered with Bryan, who surrendered five hits, walked three and fanned 11 in a complete-game effort. The right-hander improved to 5-0.

"Brett's been a model of consistency for us. He always gives us his best effort," Kincaid said. "Tonight he established his fastball early, and he gave them fits all night with his curveball."

The A's struck first in this one, with Tanner Schaf scoring from third on a double steal with one out in the bottom of the first. The Cyclones tied it in the top of the fifth on Lawson's run-scoring single. He plated Ben Maliske, who doubled in the previous at-bat.

In the nightcap, the A's loaded the bases in their half of the seventh with a Janz single and two Beulah errors. Wenstrom then blooped a single into left center to end it.

The Cyclones took a 2-0 lead on Luke Senske's RBI single in the first inning, and Maliske's solo home run in the second. The A's evened the score in the bottom of the second on Parker Paul's run-scoring double and Schaf's sacrifice fly to right.

RBI base hits by Eric Ham and Tyler Schmidt in the top of the third made it 4-2 Beulah, but Mandan pulled even again with a two-run fourth. Trevor Huck brought in a run with a grounder to second, and Schaf drove in the tying tally with an infield hit.

Mandan starter Chris Junker got off to a shaky start, allowing four runs on 10 hits through three innings.

However, Junker settled down and pitched shutout ball in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. He allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but retired the next two batters before giving way to Huck. Huck fanned the only batter he faced and wound up getting the win.
