For the Bismarck High boys and girls cross country teams, Saturday's Mandan Kiwanis Invitational was another routine display of excellence.

But while BHS took the additions to its trophy case in stride, the real excitement surrounded the Dickinson girls.

Led by Dakota Wolf, who crossed the finish line first in 15:21, the Midgets put together a solid second place performance, trailing only BHS, 43-51.

"I'm really impressed with our team this race," Wolf said. "We all stepped up really well. I know that we can only get better. Now that they know we can be up there, that's all we need."

Bismarck's girls were led by runner-up Taylor Pintar, who clocked in at 15:36. Teammate Alexa Wachter was fifth, behind Century runners Nikki Huelsman and Andrea Markwart. The Patriots were third with 73 points.

Even though his team won, BHS coach Scott Reichenberger wanted to talk about the Midgets, who placed five girls in the top 15.

"I thought our girls ran hard, and I give them credit for that, but I would also give hats off to Dickinson," Reichenberger said. "They raced very well, just like they did last year."

Wolf, who was the runner-up at last year's Kiwanis, said she enjoys the flat course at Mandan Municipal Golf Course.

"I love it, actually,"Wolf said. "It feels more like a track than a course, really. It's as fast as a track, too."

Wolf said she had a definite strategy heading into Saturday's run.

"I decided before the race that I was going to go out with the Bismarck girls instead of by myself for the first mile, and then break away far enough to where I could keep it," she explained.

Wolf did leave the pack about 1.5 miles into the race.

But even if Bismarck still won out with its depth, BHS had eight runners in the top 20 and 10 in the top 24. And that's without Sarah Feeney, who has been away on basketball recruiting trips, and without Lindsay Achtenberg, who has been injured.

With Osoro leading the way, Bismarck's boys have been all but untouchable. With five runners in the top 14, Bismarck finished with 32 points, far ahead of runner-up Jamestown (111).

Osoro again won handily, finishing the course in 15:33. Teammate Devin Huizenga was second, with Christian Brown Otter seventh, Josh Nuss eighth and Dion Schulz 14th.

Osoro cut 33 seconds off his 2007 winning time despite a case of nausea, but he was not particularly impressed with his own handiwork.

"It was a good time, but not like what Iwas looking into," he said. "I think the second mile, second (kilometer), kind of got me a little bit."

Bismarck co-coach Dave Zittleman was happier with the performance.

"We slowed him down the first (kilometer)," Zittleman said. "We wanted him to run with Devin for awhile, and then we wanted him to race off of that. He ran another solid race."

That could be said about the Demons as a group.

"We had a huge week of training," Zittleman said. "This is the same week every year that we just go crazy with training, and our guys really responded out there well."
