10 years ago (1998): The University of Mary men's soccer team did three things it never had done before: Host a playoff game, win a playoff game and beat Dordt when it mattered.
Three years in a row Dordt had bounced the Marauders from the playoffs, but U-Mary put an end to that streak with a 1-0 victory over the Defenders in an independent sectional quarterfinal.
Tyler Garnett scored a second-half goal with assists going to Tim Green and Anthony Soriano. Lance Kalberer made 11 saves in a shutout for U-Mary.
"They kicked out butts the first half," U-Mary coach Bill Ashby said. "In the second we kept possession."
20 years ago (1988): St. Mary's and Mandan won quarterfinals in the Western Dakota Association girls basketball tournament, earning the right to face each other in the semifinal.
The top-ranked Braves crushed Williston 67-43, while the Saints took care of Dickinson Trinity 58-46.
For Mandan, Melissa Ulmer led the way with 14 points, while LaShalle Boehm added 10.
Heather Rossland scored a game-high 16 for the Coyotes, while Tootie Anseth added 10 points.
Holly Haskins paced the Saints with 11 points, while Theresa Berger and Nicky Schwehr had 10 each.
Amy Dukart led the Titans with 14 points, while ReAnn Sickler chipped in 12.
50 years ago (1958): Dallas Kopp, Mayville State Teachers College back, won individual scoring honors in the 1958 North Dakota Intercollegiate Conference.
Kopp scored 77 points on 11 touchdowns and 11 extra points to nose out Valley City's Bill Thomas. Thomas collected 12 touchdowns and three conversions for 75.
Bill Svenkesen, Wahpeton Science, was in third place in the loop with 42 points. Charles Frey of Jamestown and Ellendale's Bob Tambur follow with 36 points each.
Mike Vanyo of Wahpeton had 31, Jim Simle of Jamestown 25, Jerry Jerdee of Jamestown and Mokey Dinius of Dickinson 24 each.
Erv Kessell and Lincoln Reinhiller of Dickinson, Bob Bodine of Minot and Kenny Helwig of Ellendale counted 18 points apiece during the season.
