10 years ago (1998):A pitcher in Tim Gienger's position might have been chilled to the bone when he took the mound at the state Legion baseball tourney.
Instead, the left-hander was one cool customer, as he pitched the Bismarck Governors to an 11-7 win over the rival Mandan Chiefs.
For Bismarck, Nathan Mickelsen was 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Kevin Benson went 4-for-5 with a double, two triples and three knocked in. Chad Lein also had three hits, including two doubles and two runs scored. Gienger added two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
For Mandan, Joe Schneider went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Ron Bethke scored two runs. Jon Arenz collected three hits, including two doubles and two runs batted in. Nate Lighthizer was 3-for-4 , while Andy Banning took the loss.
20 years ago (1988): If the New England American Legion baseball team were a fighter it wouldn't be Muhammad Ali of "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."
Coach Bryan Flyberg's club is more like Rocky Marciano. They're coming to get you. They may absorb some punishment doing it, but they will get you back.
New England absorbed punishment, but when the final count was in they got Washburn. The knockout was by 9-6 in the title game of the Southwest Region Class A tournament.
For New England, Dean Madler finished 2-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in, while Greg Klein was 2-for-4 with a triple and two knocked in. Pete Dobitz went 2-for-5 with a double, while Mark Kunze collected a double and two runs scored. Todd Sheldon picked up the win after pitching seven innings of nine-hit, five-earned run baseball.
For Washburn, Donnie Jensen hit a two-run double and Kevin Lawler and Jesse Headrick tallied two hits each. Mike Motschenbacher was 2-for-4 with a double, while Joe Eisenmann stole two bases and Shayne Simon had a run-scoring hit.
50 years ago (1958): City Softball League champion Elks completed the regular season undefeated while the Knights of Columbus climbed into a tie with Nicola's for second place.
In the other game, Tom Brown homered in the bottom of the seventh to give Capital Commercial College a 9-8 decision over KFYR.
Elks had a close call, edging Nicola's 7-6. Fred Anstrom had two hits for the losers, while George Carman picked up two for the winners. Hank Siems earned the victory - his 15th - and Ken Anderson took the loss.
KC's tipped Werner's, who got three hits from Ron Olmstead. Leo Feist picked up the win, while Joe Bride and Schultz hurled for the losers.
CCC's Clayton Gruebele went all the way for the win, while John Tkach also went the route for the loss.
