10 years ago (1998): Kurt Schwamp waited too long for this night to let Dakota State spoil it.
Playing his first home game in over a year, the junior honorable mention All-American scored 21 points to lead the University of Mary men's basketball team to a 68-60 win over the Trojans.
Schwamp had 15 points after halftime, helping the Marauders recover from a slow start.
"We got him some touches in the second half, and that got him going," U-Mary coach Jim Feeney said.
Wes Kellogg added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Marauders, while Nathan Goracke and Emmery Thompson each scored 10 points.
20 years ago (1988): It didn't come close to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar farewell tour but Janelle Hammeren's last stop in Bismarck had an NBA flavor. Hammeren was canning 3-pointers from an area usually reserved for pros.
The ex-Bismarck High and Bismarck State product finished with eight 3-pointers and 28 points in guiding Northern Montana to a 92-72 college women's basketball victory over the University of Mary.
"She got on a roll," said Marauders coach Cal Collins.
Leslie Ursich led U-Mary with 21 points and Renae Amundson added 12, while Carolyn Stacy contributed 11 and Barb Gelinske chipped in 10 points. Kris Nelson pulled down 11 rebounds.
50 years ago (1958): Wrestling, a sport catching on like wildfire in high schools and colleges throughout the nation, is making its debut in the two local high schools this year.
The Demon grapplers are under the tutelage of Marv Seibold. At St. Mary's, no formal wrestling program as yet exists. But the Very Rev. E.J. Becwar, superintendent of Catholic schools in Bismarck, is busy laying the final plans.
The Demons open action at Assumption Abbey with this lineup: Kurt Calkins at 92 pounds; Robert Silbernagel at 103; Richard Fowler at 112; Tom Giovannoni or Fred Meyer at 120; Lyle Westbrook at 127; Willis Richard at 133; Duwayne Hettick at 138; Henry Goldade or Mike Robb at 145; Jim Bailey or John Hanson at 154; Brian Enge at 165; Dan Schmaltz at 175; and Charlie Wagner at heavyweight.
