Cody Duchscherer says Bismarck's Hawktree course is his favorite place to play golf.

With the exception of a couple of holes, the Minot High School golfer again found the course much to his liking on Thursday.

Despite a pair of double-bogeys on the back nine, Duchscherer finished the day with a 3-over par 75 to claim medalist honors at the St. Mary's Invitational. The senior earned his second individual title of the season after shooting an even-par 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back.

"Hawktree is my favorite course. … I just like the way it's laid out, and it's always in great shape," Duchscherer said. "It's a course that challenges you. I like challenges."

Bismarck's Oliver Boeckel and Dickinson's Jarl Abrahamson each carded a 76 to finish in a tie for second. Bismarck took the team title with a 311, finishing nine strokes ahead of second-place Dickinson.

Duchscherer parred five holes and offset a pair of bogeys with two birdies on the front nine. He started the back nine with a double-bogey on par-5 No. 10.

After parring the next five holes, Duchscherer needed two extra shots to finish par-4 No. 16. He then closed out his round with a par and a birdie.

"Except for 10 and 16, I was very happy with my round," Duchscherer said. "I was in pretty good position on 10, but I missed a 10-foot putt and a five-foot putt. On 16, I just hit the ball in the water. But I also made some amazing pars today. It was a good day overall."

Duchscherer trailed Abrahamson by one stroke (35-36) after nine holes and two after 14. However, Abrahamson bogeyed each of the last four holes, while Duchscherer - despite a double-bogey on No. 16 - played 1-over the rest of the way. Duchscherer's birdie on par-5 No. 18 put him on top.

"It was quite a battle out there. You come to expect that in this region," Duchscherer said. "It was a great finish … right down to the wire."

Boeckel roared back from as many as six strokes down to earn a tie for second. After shooting a 41 on the front nine, Boeckel recorded a 1-under 35 on the back, scoring three birdies along the way. He had two birdies while erasing a four-stroke deficit in the final three holes to pull even with Abrahamson.

However, a quadruple-bogey on par-5 No. 7 proved costly for Boeckel.

"I hit the ball in the middle of the fairway but then two bad swings cost me," he said. "That was the only bad hole I had all day, but that's golf. You deal with it and try to work through it. Other than that hole, it was a nice round."

Bismarck coach Mike Bichler agreed.

"Oliver had a real solid effort today. He just struggled on seven," he said. "That's Hawktree for you. You can play great, but there always seems to be one hole that will make you pay. He was able to recover, though, and finish strong."

The Demons, who won for the fourth time this season, also got strong efforts from Casey Gleich, Austin Gunderson and Britain Bentz, who shot 77, 78 and 80, respectively.

Gleich was fourth in the individual standings, Gunderson took fifth, and Bentz finished in a three-way tie for ninth.

"I thought we played well today," Bichler said. "This is a tough course and there was some wind to contend with, but the guys put together a good round of golf. And we had a balanced effort, which is always nice to see. This is our fourth win. We've been pretty consistent all year."
