From 1D: The Pittsburgh Steelers franchise joined the NFL in 1933. The team name they played with in that season was the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pittsburgh franchise was the Pirates from 1933-1940. They became the Steelers in 1941 and finished that season with a 1-9-1 record. It would not be until 1947 before they played in their first playoff game, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 21-0.

10 years ago (1999): The Bismarck boys soccer team beat Century 2-1.

Chris Adams scored an unassisted goal in the second half for the Demons, which turned out to be the game-winner. David Cook scored on an assist from Justin Fischer. Jarred Roloff made 10 saves.

"We've been controlling most of our games," Bismarck coach Lou Ogaard said.

For the Patriots, Tom Kopp scored and Kyle Heitkamp stopped 11 shots.

"We had one slip, and they scored, Century coach Haddis Haulu said.

St. Mary's and Minot played to a scoreless draw as John Udland made nine saves.

"We were more worried about getting a head on the ball than actually putting it on net," Saints coach Tim Mueller said.

20 years ago (1989): The Bismarck girls basketbal team made it look easy against Dickinson Trinity, winning a Western Dakota Association game 56-36.

Jessica DeRemer led four Demons in double figures with 15 points. Becky Schweigert scored 12, Lesley Jacobson 11 and Suzy Mayer 10 points. DeRemer finished off a double-double with 12 rebounds.

"Our guards took over," Bismarck coach Gary Schauer said.

Kim Feldhusen scored a game-high 17 points for the Titans.

50 years ago (1959): DICKINSON - The Alumni dominated most of the action to win 32-0 over Dickinson High School in the annual Alumni football game.

The varsity launched only one sustained drive, in the second quarter, to reach the alumni's 20. The halftime score was 6-0, and the alums scored three times in the final quarter.

Passing by John Dinsdale, Pat Keller and running by Tom Gunderson and Jim Kack did most of the offensive damage, and Arb Kessel was outstanding as a defensive tackle.

Halfback Ernie Ficek suffered a broken nose, despite wearing a face mask, and will be out of action.

Coach Roger Huffman said he may move Mike Ryan to right half and bring in Dave Pankratz at left half, or bring in Gary Bailey at right half.

"We were weak on the fundamentals," Huffman said. "We're going to drill on blocking and tackling."

In another alumni game, the Mandan grads beat the varsity 12-7.
