This time Jared Farley made it stick.
Farley strung together rides or 87 and 92 for a 179 to lead the pack in Saturday's session of the Bismarck PBRBull Riding Challenge.
Farley, a 22-year-old from Kempsey, Australia, reached the finals the previous night in Thief River Falls, Minn., but was bucked off in the second go.
Saturday was another day and another story. He rode Blue Chip for an 87 in the first round, to qualify for the finals. He put up the top score of the night in the second go, sticking on Evil Forces for 8 seconds and a 92. That was his first 90-plus score in PBRcompetition this season.
"I'd never been on him … but he's one of the best bulls in the world," Farley said of his decision to choose Evil Forces in the bull draft that was held before the finals. "Ihad an idea that he might fit my style of riding and it worked out."
Then Farley had to sit and wait our four more rides. Luke Snyder followed Farley with a 90.5 aboard Walk The Line, giving him a 177.5 for the evening. ZachBrown was next and he put up an 89.5 on Bad Medicine, giving him a two-ride total of 178.
The top two seeds in the finals, AustinMeier and Cody Campbell, by the final two bulls of the night, making Farley Saturday's top dog.
Cody Ford of Hermiston,Ore., was the overall champion in the two-day PBRevent at the Civic Center. He put together a 90-91.5 - 181.5 for top honors. Farley shared second place with Ryan McConnel of Farmington, N.M. McConnel tallied a 90-89 - 179 on Friday.
Farley admitted Ford had set the bar really high Friday.
"You have to have two rides of 90 points (to pass Ford) and that's pretty tough to do," said Farley.
Nonetheless, it was a good night for the 5-foot-7, 143-pound Australian. "I'm real happy with the finish. Anytime you can ride two bulls in one night you've got to be happy with it," he observed.
The last time he reached the buzzer twice in an evening was in late June in Newcastle, Australia.
Brown's 178 tied him with Willis Trosclair, who put up a similar score on Friday, for fourth.
All told, 10 riders covered two bulls in the two sessions at the Civic Center.
Kolt Davidson, riding third in the second go, was the first to score in the finals, posting a 91 for a two-ride total of 170. The bulls won the next seven matches before Farley posted his 92.
There were 13 qualifying rides in Saturday's first go, one less than the 14 who made the grade on Friday. The two remaining spots for Saturday's second go were filled by a random computer draw.
Three North Dakota competitors rode on Saturday. Jay Pahlke of Bismarck and Stetson Lawrence of Trenton were bucked off.
Ross Lewis of Zap rode Red Lollipop for a 65 and was given the option of a reride. On the reride, Lewis was quickly tossed by Big Coyote. The bull decided he was going to become the main attraction and eluded and overpowered all efforts to remove him from the arena for 5 minutes.
