COLLEGEATHLETICS

MINOTSTATEJOINS DIVISIONII

MINOT (AP) - Minot State University says the NCAA has approved its plans to become a member.

The school says it will be a candidate for NCAA Division II, making the switch from the NAIA.

Athletic director Rick Hedberg says Minot State will have three years to make the transition before becoming a full-fledged NCAA member.

The Beavers currently are members of the Dakota Athletic Conference. They hope to join the Northern Sun Conference in NCAA Division II.

SIOUXFALLSJOINS DIVISIONII

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The University of Sioux Falls said Friday that its application to join NCAA Division II athletics has been accepted.

The private university with 1,675 students will go through a three-year transition period beginning in fall.

It will remain a member of the NAIA and the Great Plains Athletic Conference for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. In the 2011-12 academic year, USF will be ineligible for postseason play in either NAIA or NCAA and will operate under NCAA Division II regulations.

Its sports for both men and women are basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field. It offers football, baseball and wrestling for men, and softball and volleyball for women.

PRAIRIEROSESTATEGAMES GETTINGUNDER WAY

GRAND FORKS (AP) - The Prairie Rose State Games are being held in Grand Forks this weekend, but it may be a while before they come back to the Red River Valley.

Bill Palmiscno of the Grand Forks Park District chairs this year's event, and he's a member of the Prairie Rose board. He says participation in the games, which are the state's version of the Olympics, has been slipping over the years.

About 3,000 athletes are expected for this weekend's games. The event peaked in 1999, with 7,252 participants.

The games switch back to Bismarck for each of the next two years, including the 25th anniversary.

Palmiscno says it may be a good time to evaluate the future of the event. He says it's possible the games could switch to an every-other-year or every four-year event.

Palmiscno says holding the games every year may be a "little too much."
