Following a two-year hiatus, the Bismarck Dick Karlgaard Quarterback Club cross country meet was resurrected Saturday. Obviously the runners were itching to go.

With Bismarck's Joash Osoro leading the way, five runners burned up the 5-kilometer Tom O'Leary boys course in less than 17 minutes.

Prior to Saturday, that feat had been accomplished just twice, both times by SamLarson of Jamestown in 2005. Osoro, a senior, was clocked in a winning time of 15:52.29. That's almost 50 seconds faster than Larson's course record.

DevinHuizenga of BHS, Justin ManyRibs of Parshall, Christian BrownOtter of BHS and Brett Kelly of Century followed Osoro into the chute in 16:24.92, 16:37.86, 16:40.03 and 16:53.01, respectively.

"I wasn't going for time this race.It is a tough course,"Osoro said. "…We're still doing a lot of mileage (in training).That doesn't point to a fast time."

Huizenga said the Demons were motivated to run well while racing in their own back yard. "This is the only real Bismarck race we have," he said. "… We didn't want to disappoint the home fans."

Josh Nuss was Bismarck's fourth finisher and took sixth overall. "Even though we put in a hard week of practice we all come out to race," he said.

Bismarck's winning total was 22 with seven runners placing in the top 14.

Many Ribs, a junior, ran the fastest time ever recorded by a Class Brunner on the O'Leary layout. However, he said he was more interested in where he placed.

"Iknew I could beat everyone else (aside from Osoro and Huizenga)," he said. "I was surprised at how close I came to them. Iwas within striking distance of Devin, so I felt pretty good."

Bismarck also won the girls division handily, putting five runners in the top 13 for a 38. That gave BHSa 19-point edge on runner-up Dickinson.

Taylor Pintar took third to pace the Demons. Dakota Wolf of Dickinson won the girls race in 15:22.03. Nikki Huelsman of Century placed second with a clocking of 15:439.76 for 4 kilometers.

Wolf, a junior, was only a second slower than last week's winning time at the Mandan Kiwanis Invitational. The Mandan race was run on a flat layout. The O'Leary layout has two unforgiving hills.

"It was just a good day,"Wolf said. "… It was really unexpected, but I can't complain about it."

Huelsman, running in a tie for fourth, moved into second in the final 500 meters.

"I was behind Dakota the whole race. She took off pretty fast,"Huelsman said.

Pintar said Saturday's victory was a typical outing for the BHSgirls. "We have a strong pack this year," she said. "Our top 10 is really strong. They're all in there in the top 20 or 30."
