10 years ago (1997):Travis Sturdevant grew up in a football family. He not only has made the family proud on the gridiron but also on the basketball court.

Sturdevant, a 6-1 guard for Century, was named Mr. Basketball by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

"He's an excellent kid," Century coach Jerry Wilson said. "You couldn't have picked a better choice."

Sturdevant's selection makes it a clean sweep by Bismarck-Mandan players for the top honors in the 1996-97 school year. Jaye Amundson of Mandan was named Miss Basketball last fall.

Sturdevant beat out four others for the award:Brad Phillips, Beulah; Shane Dettmann, Bismarck; Brandon Badding, Langdon; and Steve Sedler, Griggs County Central. Under a new voting system Sturdevant received 53 points, Dettmann 44, Sedler 38, Badding 27 and Phillips 16.

Sturdevant, sidelined during the Class A tournament by a broken ankle, averaged 20.3 points, 4.5 rebound and 5.5 assists this season.

20 years ago (1987): Three University of North Dakota hockey players were named to the all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association first team in a vote of league players conducted by WDAZ-TV in Grand Forks.

Forwards Tony Hrkac and Bob Joyce and defenseman Ian Kidd were the UND players cited. Rounding out the first team were forward Gary Emmons of Northern Colorado, defenseman Guy Gosseling of Minnesota-Duluth, and goaltender Mike Richter of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin's Paul Ranheim and Tony Granato and Minnesota's Corey Millen were the three forwards picked for the second team. Defenseman named were Rob Doyle of Colorado College and Todd Richards of Minnesota. The goalie was Dave Roach of Michigan Tech

Conspicuous by his absence on the all-star team was UND goalie Ed Belfour, generally considered the best collegiate netminder in the country after leading the Sioux into the Final Four this week with a 38-8 record..

50 years ago (1957): WINNIPEG, Man. - Chuck Maxime, former Jamestown High School and Auburn University football star, has signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Western Interprovincial Football Union.

The former Jamestown gridder, who graduates from Auburn this spring, will report to the Bomber training camp on July 5.

Maxime, who now weighs in at 225, is considered a prime prospect for the Winnipeg club since two guards from last year's team will not return this season.

Maxime had been drafted by the Chicago Bears of the National Football League, but chose the Canadian offer instead. The Bombers are coached by former University of Minnesota star Bud Grant.
