DEVILS LAKE - The Bismarck Governors struck early and racked up their fifth victory over Mandan in five starts, beating the Chiefs 7-3 in a state qualifying game at the Western Division American Legion tournament on Saturday.

The Governors broke a 1-1 tie with a five-run second inning that was helped along by three Mandan errors and two walks by right-hander Jared Quast.

Torey Bohan singled and Tyler Johnson drew a walk to get the decisive inning going. Matt Loomis singled to right, and when the ball skipped by Chad Brucker for an error both Bohan and Johnson came around to score. Loomis ended up on second and dashed home when left fielder Matt Keller misjudged Nathan Schlosser's drive for a two-base error. Cody Erhardt's single brought Schlosser in with the final run of the inning. Three of the runs were unearned.

Dustin Wenzel provided the final Bismarck run, crunching a solo homer over the left field fence in the fourth inning.

Left-hander Jeremy Campbell went the distance on the mound for Bismarck to improve to 6-1. He walked two, struck out five and was charged with only two earned runs. He threw 142 pitches, 87 of them strikes.

Quast also threw a complete game, delivering 127 pitches. He was charged with four earned runs.

With the loss, Mandan's season ended at 19-36.

Dickinson 4, Devils Lake 0

With the season on the line, Kyle Schroeder wanted the ball.

Dickinson Roughriders coach Cory Hansen complied and reaped huge benefits. Schroeder, Dickinson's ace left-hander, fired a one-hit shutout, fanning 14 as Dickinson earned a state tournament berth with a victory over Devils Lake.

The Saturday morning win at Roosevelt Park moved Dickinson, 35-22, into the Western Division Legion tournament's third-place game. Devils Lake's season ended at 29-24.

Schroeder, a 6-foot-1, 198-pounder headed for the University of Mary, was superb, holding Devils Lake hitless until the eighth inning. He walked four and two Storm hitters reached base via errors.

Schroeder bedeviled Devils Lake with a snake-like curveball, racking up the majority of his strikeouts with two-strike breaking pitches.

"(The curve) was definitely my best pitch today," Schroeder said. "I wasn't getting the velocity I wanted on my fastball, so I had to rely on the curve. … I've been working on my 12-to-6 curveball, and that definitely worked for me today."

Devils Lake advanced only three men as far as second base.

The second man to reach scoring position was Lance Johansen, who legged out a double on a flare to right center in the bottom of the eighth inning. Center fielder Tyler Steffan made a long run and dived for the ball, missing a circus catch by inches.

Dickinson gave Schroeder all the support he needed in the fourth, exploding on Devils Lake starter Jayson Miller, who carried a no-hitter into the inning.
