A seven-run inning may not be baseball's equivalent of the nuclear option, but it goes well beyond conventional offense.
So when the Mandan A's presented pitcher Reid Jungling with seven second-inning runs on Friday, he knew it was clear sailing.
Jungling, a 14-year-old lefty, subdued Beulah with breaking stuff for a 7-5 victory in the first game of the B Classic Legion baseball tournament at Municipal Ballpark.
Later in the day Beulah blanked the Fargo White Sox 8-0 and the Bismarck Reps blasted Dickinson 12-4. The Reps took on Enderlin in a late game that was pushed back to almost 10 p.m. due to a long afternoon rain delay.
Mandan's victory was something of a surprise. The A's entered the game with an 8-18 record. Beulah stood 18-6. Jungling, who will be a freshman this fall at Mandan High School, was the equalizer. He improved to 4-1.
"With a runner on base, I feel like I can focus on the batter (with a big lead)," said Jungling, a 5-foot-10, 160-pounder. "… I try to hit more corners. If I walk a guy, it's not a major factor … so you can kind of mess with the batters."
He did the messing with a lot of knuckleballs and fastballs and only an occasional curve.
"I probably threw 40 percent (knuckeballs). I threw my curveball rarely. That just hasn't been working for me lately," Jungling said.
Jungling said his knuckleball resembles a splitter. "Most of the time it drops off the table," he said.
With just nine wins, Mandan hasn't enjoyed many seven-run innings. "The balls just fell where we needed them to fall," said Jungling, who contributed a bunt single to Mandan's rally. "We put bunts down and did the small things. … It was a good inning."
Jungling said going the distance on a 90-plus-degree day took its toll. "I was gassed. I felt it beginning in the sixth inning," he said.
He gave up three hits and two walks in the final two innings, but still finished with a six-hitter, four walks and six strikeouts.
Once Mandan put its seven runs in the books it hit a brick wall in the form of right-handed reliever Tyler Bauman. Bauman fanned 10, walked none and gave up just one hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief work.

Beulah 8, Fargo White Sox 0
Beulah right-hander Casey Hausauer blanked the Fargo White Sox with a one-hitter that required just 81 pitches. But it took him over four hours to get the job done.
A rain delay of 2:47 between the third and fourth innings made the game a long-lived affair and raised some doubts in Hausauer's mind.
"My arm was a little sore before the game even started, so I thought my arm would be stiff when we came back," said Hausauer, now 3-0. "… But I played a little catch (after the rain delay) and I was pretty much ready to go."
Still, Hausauer said he was glad his teammates shortened the game to five innings via the eight-run rule. He said he normally has enough steam for seven innings, but Friday was an exception. "I was at the Padres camp yesterday in Mandan, and I did some hard throwing (from shortstop) over there," he said.
Fargo managed just one hit off Hausauer. Leadoff man Jeff Shipkowksi drilled a one-out double to right-center in the third inning. Hausauer walked three and two runners reached base via error.
Beulah started fast, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning as Ike Michaelson and Tanner Boe rapped run-scoring singles. The Cyclones led 5-0 when the rain began. Levi Lawson and Tim Wolf led the Cyclone attack with two hits each. Wolf also stole three bases.
Hausauer said he normally doesn't approach Friday's pace of two strikeouts-plus per inning.
"Today I hit the outside corner a lot, and my control was under control. My curveball was working, and my fastball was going where I wanted it to."
The straight pitch did the bulk of the work. "I threw mostly fastballs," Hausauer said. "The last two innings I probably didn't throw more than four curveballs."

Bismarck Reps 12, Dickinson 4
After splitting their first 18 games, the Bismarck Reps are rolling. The Reps downed Dickinson Friday for their fifth win in six starts.
Center fielder Nate Schlosser helped the Bismarck cause with a two-run single and a two-run double from the cleanup spot. He said it's important for the Reps to retain the momentum that they brought into the B Classic.
"I expected us to be a little bit higher than that," he said of Bismarck's 9-9 start. "But we're on a roll now."
The victory over the Dickinson Roughriders was the first of what Schlosser hopes will be four steps to a tournament title. "Last year our team won it," he said.
Schlosser began the season hitting fifth and moved into the fourth spot a couple weeks ago. He said he likes batting out of the RBI slots.
"I feel confident with runners on base," he said.
Schlosser said Friday's 12-run salvo is typical of the Reps - on their best days.
"We've had our games where we haven't hit the ball well, but there are games when we come out and step it up, too," he said. "… If we're motivated to play, we hit the ball well."
There was evidently a lot of motivation against the Roughriders. Darron Olson and Drew Hausauer at the top of the lineup cracked three hits apiece. Schlosser and Zach Klabo chipped in two each to lead a 12-hit attack. Olson tripled and knocked in two runs.
Zach Keller tripled and singled Ethan Ladbury banged two doubles for Dickinson.
