Ty Manke didn't have the best season in the saddle bronc while competing in the Badlands Circuit.
The cowboy from Hermosa, S.D., doesn't even recall where he finished in the standings. Manke just knows he's had better years.
"It seemed like I didn't ride well,"Manke said, "or I wasn't drawing good."
Manke came away with a favorable performance in the saddle bronc Friday night at the PRCA Championship Rodeo. Manke leads the event after scoring a 77 at the Bismarck Civic Center.
The rodeo continues tonight, and Manke is hoping nobody will be able to top his score.
"It will help me focus on next year,"Manke said of being the event leader. "Ilike coming here. It's a good rodeo."
Manke's top score came on a reride. He rode Bay Watch on his first attempt and notched a score of 62. Rodeo officials gave him the option for a reride.
Competing in the event twice in the same night can take its toll on a cowboy, Manke said.
"You're almost worn out after the first ride,"he said. "It's just an extra hassle. You don't want to hold the rodeo up."
After a couple seconds, Manke knew the reride had paid off.
"You never know what your score is going to be,"he said. "It felt like she was bucking pretty good."
Manke, 21, competes for National American University in Rapid City, S.D. He was seeded first in the regional standings in the saddle bronc and second in bull riding, but he didn't compete in the latter Friday.
