Those close to the wrestling circuit have probably noticed an opening for the head coaching job at U-Mary.

That doesn't mean that Ben Berogan isn't in good standing with the school. Berogan accepted the job on an interim basis for this past season when Josh Kerbaugh resigned.

U-Mary athletic director Al Bortke said the school opened up the position to find a permanent coach. Bortke immediately encouraged Berogan to submit his application for the job.

Bortke said about six people have applied.

"We'll have to look at all of them in fairness," Bortke said. "Ben has been very interested in the job. We want to look at all candidates."

Bortke said the coaching opening has hurt the school's recruiting process. Bortke said U-Mary plans to name a permanent head coach by the middle to the end of the month.

"We want to move as quickly as we can," Bortke said. "Sometimes haste makes waste. It's a key time for recruiting."

Weidman, doubles

team looking fine

U-Mary's No. 3 singles player Jason Weidman made a splash when he topped Concordia College's Andre Genereux 6-1, 6-1.

"He put a lot of pressure on his opponent,"U-Mary coach Mike Skytland said. "He placed his shots really well. He made his opponent try to hit winners."

U-Mary's No. 3 doubles team of Jordan Koushkouski-Josh Dietz seem to make a good pair. They defeated Concordia's Jared Johnson-Lukas Radde 8-5.

"They played on a fast surface,"Skytland said. "You have to get to the net more. They adjusted to that style well. They seem to play well together."

U-Mary (0-2) travels to New Ulm, Minn., on Friday and Saturday for matches against Bethany Lutheran and Martin Luther.

The women play three matches in New Ulm against Bethany Lutheran, Upper Iowa and Martin Luther.

A good day

Michael Feldman couldn't have asked for a better day on the ball field this past Sunday for U-Mary in a doubleheader.

The Bismarck native rapped a ninth-inning walk-off home run to give the Marauders a 1-0 victory over Concordia-St. Paul. The home run, his seventh of the season, capped a 4-for-5 game.

"Their kid threw hard,"U-Mary coach Brad Walsh said. "Mike's style of hitting fits their pitching."

He was equally impressive on the mound. Feldman twirled a four-hit, no-walk complete game in a 2-1 win. The senior held the top-hitting team in the conference to an unearned run. He hit 2-for-3 with a double in that game.

"He throws hard and has a good slider," Walsh said. "He uses those two very effectively. His slider dives away from right-handers, and they had nine right-handers in the lineup."

The Marauders are 7-17 overall and plays two doubleheaders at Winona State on Saturday and Sunday.

Replacing Moody

Dickinson State athletic director Roger Ternes and his staff have a difficult task ahead of them.

DSU is doing a national search to find a new head volleyball coach to replace successful mentor Dave Moody.

Ternes said a few applications have streamed into his office. Ternes will be out of town at the national NAIA convention until April 16, and then the school will take a serious look at the applicants.

"There's going to be huge shoes to fill," Ternes said. "Anybody following Dave, it's going to be a tough task. By Dave continuing to teach here and be on our staff, that might cause some people to shy away from applying. There's a legacy, and he's staying here."

Speculation has been that former National American coach Todd Lowery might throw his name in the hat for the job. Ternes said that Lowery hasn't applied.

"He has a business in Rapid City,"Ternes said. "He has indicated that he won't apply, but he still could apply. I anticipate that we will get a number of very qualified applicants."

Short shots

3 Dickinson State pitcher Sara Jane Webster etched her name into school history. Webster fanned a school-record 15 hitters against Black Hills State.

Webster and Mehgan Shaw combined to fan 23 batters in the doubleheader.

3 Dickinson State's Christa Hofland set a school record in the shot put with a mark of 43-10 at the David Little Invitational in Spearfish, S.D.

The Dickinson native erased a 23-year-old mark, which was held by Lori Wegh.

3 Linton native Kyle Carr recorded his first two victories on the hill for the University of Minnesota baseball team.

Carr got his first win against Indiana, a 5-4 triumph on March 29. He bested Ohio State 6-4 on Saturday.

Carr is now 2-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.79. He has thrown 38 innings and has recorded 32 strikeouts and 19 walks.

3 University of North Dakota's Chris Gulsvig went 3-for-3 with two doubles against Nebraska-Omaha. The senior from Bismarck is hitting .341 with nine RBIs and five doubles in 44 at-bats.

3 University of Utah associated head coach Carolyn DeHoff was on the campus of North Dakota State on Wednesday to interview for the head women's basketball position. The interview will continue through today.

DeHoff completed her first season as an associate head coach. Her duties at Utah included coordinating recruiting efforts, point guard development, organization and planning of the schedule, coordination of academic affairs and directing summer camps.
