10 years ago (1998):Russ Schmeichel has built a cross country dynasty at Jamestown High School.

In 24 seasons as the head coach, Schmeichel has led the Blue Jays to 17 state championships, including sweeping the boys and girls team titles the past three seasons.

For building the Blue Jay cross country team into a perennial power, Schmeichel has received the Special Achievement Award from the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. It is the association's highest honor.

Winning multiple titles is familiar territory to the other Special Achievement Award winners as well.

Jamey Mulske was a 21-time All-American and eight time-national champion for the University of Mary track team, while Mayville State's Scott Berry succeeded his college mentor as the all-time winningest coach in North Dakota college baseball history.

Mulske, a native of Ashley, finished her career for the Marauders as one of the most-decorated athletes in NAIA history.

20 years ago (1988): Cherlene Horner put the finishing touches on a marvelous three days of golf by shooting an 82 at Riverwood to win the Prairie Rose Women's Golf Tournament going away.

Horner's three-day total of 247, which also included an 84 at Mandan and an 80 at Apple Creek, gave her a cushion of 28 strokes. Horner entered play at Riverwood with an 11 shot lead.

Karen Weber was second at 275, shooting a 100 at Riverwood. Yvonne Ellingson was third at 278 and Dora Huncovsky was fourth at 283.

Flight winners were Ingrid Schneider, first; Cindy Dwyer, second; Mary Wehr, third; and Wilma Freise, fourth.

50 years ago (1958): The Central League, Bismarck's contribution to amateur baseball, kicks off its 1958 season with a twin bill.

The games will be the Eagles against the Generals and Covered Wagon versus Legionnaires.
