From 1D: Bill Davidson was the first owner of concurrent champions in major North American team sports. The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Detroit Pistons won the NHL and NBA titles eight days apart in June 2004. Davidson died Saturday at the age of 86.

10 years ago (1999): Four Bismarck area players were voted by NorthDakota's high school boys hockey coaches to the all-state team and three other locals joined them on the West Region all-conference team.

Bismarck junior forward James Massen, senior defenseman John Stewart and sophomore goalie Layne Sedevie - who led the Demons to the West Region regular season and tournament titles - made the 15-man all-state squad.

Century senior forward Nathan Mickelson, the region's top scorer, also was tabbed.

Other local players who made the West Region team were Bismarck senior forwards Steve Duleh and Dalton Eichele, and Century junior defenseman Scott Honkola.

Dickinson's Jay Schnell and Josh Ritter made the all-region team, along with Williston's Jake Grassel.

20 years ago (1989): Beulah's "unsung hero" sang a song. David Lausen unleashed his vocal cords to the tune of 22 points off the bench. And in the process, helped propel the Miners into the semifinals of the state Class B tournament.

Lausen hit 16 of his points in the second half, helping Beulah overcome a 14-point deficit to defeat Standing Rock 70-61.

"He's been our unsung hero all year," Miners coach Doug Olson said.

Mike Aanderud added 20 points for Beulah, while Jon Schock contributed nine points and 17 rebounds.

For the Warriors, Ted Dogskin scored 14 points, while Lawrence Archambault and Joel Weiler had 11 each.

"They came out and never backed off," said Standing Rock coach Tim Krahler.

Newburg beat Edgeley 81-71 in another quarterfinal.

Eric Buckeye led the Rangers with 18 points and Spencer Aberle added 17, while Alan Anderson netted 12 points and Bryan Huber tallied 11.

50 years ago (1959): The Beach Bucs have won their second consecutive Region 4 title. They won the championship by overpowering the Fort Yates Warriors 64-53.

Neil Keohane and Jimmy Thompson paced the Beach attack with 16 points each.

Don Skinner was high for Fort Yates with 17 points.

In the third-place game, Hazelton beat Hettinger 37-35.

John Kalberer led the Tigers with 22 points, while Roderick Reinke paced the Shooting Stars with 15.
