10 years ago (1998):DICKINSON - Jamie Hughes led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points and Jessie Miller added 10 as the Century Patriots rolled over the Dickinson Midgets 61-34 in girls West Region basketball.

Ten different Century players put points on the board, including Jess Brendsel with nine and Beth Pickett and Natalie Kirchoffner with seven each.

Heidi Herold led Dickinson with 11 points, while Laura Cavanaugh added nine and Alison Blake chipped in seven points.

20 years ago (1988): GRANDFORKS- Scott Gunderson was a little apprehensive at first about being the only freshman on the University of North Dakota football team to be getting playing time.

But just one year out of St. Mary's High School, the 205-pound defensive end is holding his own against much larger and older opponents.

"It was kind of a scary thought at first," Gunderson said. "When Coach (Roger) Thomas asked me, I was excited. I loved it. There was no doubt about it."

Gunderson got his chance partly because of a season-ending injury to defensive end Paul Moe and partly because of his ability, Thomas said.

50 years ago (1958): DICKINSON - The Dickinson Midgets scored in the closing seconds of play to gain a 13-7 victory over the Mandan Braves.

Mandan took the opening kickoff on its own 35 and drove from there, mostly on the ground, with Bill Ellison going over from the 2 with four minutes left in the first quarter. Ralph Klug ran the extra point.

In the second half, the tables were turned. The Midgets started from midfield and nine plays later Pat Keller scored from the 2. John Dinsdale went over for the point to tie the score.

Mandan then was forced to punt and the Midgets drove to the Mandan 8 when Bill Bragg intercepted a pass to break up the threat.

Dinsdale scored the game-winning touchdown from the 1 with 20 seconds remaining.
