It's the good news-bad news scenario for other shot putters and discus throwers across North Dakota. The good news is that Hausauer will participate in his last high school meet soon.

The bad news is that Marion is only a junior.

Don't turn that dial next season. Marion has been among the many watching Hausauer steal prime time this season. Next year, Marion should get top ratings.

Marion's top toss in the shot this season is 56-101/2. That's only a couple of feet away from the school record, set last season by Steve Burian. That's the same Steve Burian who won the shot put in the North Central Conference outdoor meet this year.

Marion has also thrown the discus 167-11, which is almost 12 feet farther than last year's state-winning toss.

For all that success, Marion has a basket full of medals. Most of them for second place. But being a bridesmaid is nothing to complain about next to Hausauer.

20 years ago (1987): Tom Shea's six-year tenure as the University of Mary football coach came to an abrupt end when he announced his resignation.

Shea, who compiled a 46-15 record with the Marauders after winning an NAIADivision II national championship in 1990 at Peru (Neb.) State College, has accepted a position as defensive coordinator at Central Arkansas. He stars his new job next month at the NCAADivision IIschool.

U-Mary athletic director Al Bortke lauded Shea for brining the program "to national recognition."

"Coach Shea built a solid football program … he developed strong students and athletes who could compete both on the field and in the classroom," Bortke said.

Shea said he enjoyed the support he received in Bismarck.

"This was a tough decision to make and one I made with mixed emotions and thoughts," She said. "I've enjoyed the support and cooperation of the university and administration and students. People went out of their way for me."

Steve LeGrand, who turned around a struggling Valley City State program last season before joining U-Mary, said he had not heard of Shea's resignation and that he had not been contacted.

50 years ago (1957): Switch-hitting Art Pennington, the burly outfield-first baseman who slugged .349 and .357 in two seasons here, came to Bismarck Barons terms and will report sometime this week.

The slugger powdered 10 home runs, 10 doubles and 11 triples as a Baron first sacker last summer. His three-base output was five more than his nearest Man-Dak competitor. He also rapped in 51 runs.

Baron officials earlier signed Ray Thonn, a University of Illinois star, for first base and are grooming Pennington for the garden.

He is the 10th player to come to terms with the club and the first outfielder on the roster.

Others inked are pitchers Jim Ackers, Jackie Bowes, Frank Schwartz, Kay Backmann and Jon Fitzgerald; catcher Mike Perez; Thonn, shortstop Al Leap and player-manager Bill Hockenbury. Still prime in the Baron plans are 1956 outfielders Sam Hill and Johnny Kropf.
