10 years ago (1999): GRANDFORKS- Randy Will calls him Mandan's Quiet Assassin.

Even after pitching the Chiefs to a 12-1 victory over the Bismarck Governors in a loser-out game at the state Class A American Legion baseball tournament - the shining moment of his baseball career thus far - Darren Weiler was still somewhat lost in the shuffle, this time swallowed up by the immense shadow of Tracy Geffre.

Mandan's slugging first baseman got the fans talking - and with good reason - by going 3-for-3, by slamming his 23rd home run of the season and by picking up his 99th and 100th runs batted in of the year. He also scored three runs.

Ron Bethke went 2-for-3 and Joe Schneider collected two RBIs, while Josh Fleck was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Scott McDonald took the loss for Bismarck, while Nathan Mickelson was the relief pitcher.

"Scott didn't have a fastball or his sharp control," Governors coach Gene Severson said. "He kept us in it for a while, though."

20 years ago (1989): WESTFARGO - The Bismarck Royals season came to an end in the Class A American Legion baseball tournament with a 16-7 loss to Gardner.

For Bismarck at the plate, Jim Breuer went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in, while Tom Leifur was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Jason Salz hit a double and knocked in two.

Breuer took the loss on the mound, while Mike Rauser relieved him in the fifth inning.

"Jim's had a sore arm all year," Royals coach Jim Breuer said. "I asked him to give me two more good innings."

Bismarck finished the season with a 33-9 record.

50 years ago (1959): DICKINSON- Minot defeated Mandan 14-1 and Bismarck stopped Williston 6-4 to gain a leg in the first round of the Class AWestern Division American Legion Junior baseball tournament.

Tom Hall tripled and knocked in two for Bismarck and Neil Reuter hammered a three-bagger for Williston and scored two runs.

Al Lick went all the way for the Bismarck win. Larry Hanson was the loser.

Gordon Postovit had two hits and three runs batted in, while Rich Olthoff scored three runs for Bismarck.
