10 years ago (1999): MAYVILLE - A pair of late-inning rallies carried the University of Mary to a pair of conference wins over Mayville State.

U-Mary, down 1-0, plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning to down the Comets 2-1 in the first game. Tara Mazurkiewicz picked up the pitching win with a three-hitter, and Junell Krabbenhoft led the offense with two hits.

The second game was knotted 3-3 before the visiting Marauders scored in the top of the seventh for a 4-3 win.

20 years ago (1989): Napoleon's Colleen Fettig and Pam Gross took over the lead in Division II doubles at the 1989 WIBC Championship Tournament.

The pair finished with a total of 1,076 pins and now lead the pack by 30. Gross rolled a score of 543, while Fettig posted a 533.

50 years ago (1959): The Bismarck Demons, hampered alike by the loss of some top talent and a lack of spring-like weather, will be seeking their third straight Class A track and field title this year.

Coach Arne Martin has considerable quantity in 105 athletes.

"We'll be hurting in the middle distance," Martin said, "and in the weights and pole vault. Because of the weather, we haven't had much chance to see what we have got."

What Martin does have are double-state champion Larry Schmitke (100 and long jump) and placewinners Vern Hagen (fourth in the javelin and third in the long jump) and Don Paulson (second in the 880 and third in the discus).
