10 years ago (1999): The Mandan Chiefs started the Missouri River American Legion Baseball Classic with a victory, while the Bismarck Governors finished the first day at 1-1.

Mandan beat Billings, Mont., 5-1 behind Josh Mosser.

Ron Bethke went 2-for-4 with a double, while Andy Koedam finished 2-for-2. Josh Fleck finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Mosser allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out eight and walking three in a complete-game effort.

Bismarck beat Regina, Saskatchewan 24-2 in five innings but lost to Waite Park, Minn., 15-2.

Against Regina, Dalton Eichele went 4-for-4 with a home run, double and eight RBIs, while Joel Stugelmeyer went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Gosset added a 2-for-3 effort with a home run and three RBIs, while Nathan Mickelson was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Eddie Sadowsky earned the victory.

Against Waite Park, Nathan Mickelson was 3-for-3 with a home run and A.J. Myer added a long ball.

20 years ago (1989): Jim Hendrickson belted three home runs as Mandan split a doubleheader with Fargo in American Legion baseball.

Fargo won the first game 19-3, but the Chiefs fourght back to take the second game 11-9.

Hendrickson had one round-tripper in the first game. His two in the second game delt Fargo a big blow.

His three-run shot highlighted a six-run first inning. Hendrickson's two-run homer in the fourth staked the Chiefs to a 9-4 lead.

Damian Huettle came on in the first and held Fargo scoreless, striking out three and walking one until the seventh.

Scott Ressler had a single and a double, while Dave Kloster, Jason Myhoff and Chad Wick had two singles each.

Rick Helling hit a home run in the second game for Fargo. He finished with three hits and four runs batted in.

50 years ago (1959): Sertoma defated GPMen's Stor 13-4 and Kiwanis downed GP Sporting Goods 16-4 in the latest Cub League action.

Rhode and Longmuir homered for Sertoma as Ownes hurled a two-hitter.

Leisechner led the Kiwanis attack with three doubles and a triple, and Spitzer had three for three. Tangedahl and Kollman each hit homers.
