10 years ago (1999): The Mandan American Legion baseball team settled for a split with Minot.
The Chiefs won the first game 16-6 in five innings before the Vistas took the second game 14-2 in six innings.
"A split was just fine," Mandan coach Randy Will said.
Josh Mosser won the first game for Mandan, going five innings with three earned runs, while Ron Bethke went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Tracy Geffre finished 3-for-4 with a two run home run, while Joe Schneider was 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and six RBIs.
Nate Lighthizer added a 2-for-2 effort with a double and three RBIs.
20 years ago (1989): Jerry Schwartz won the 10K and Randy Binstock the 5K in road races held in conjunction with Dickinson's Roughrider Days.
Schwartz won the 10K Hollis Dietz Run with a time of 33:25. Binstock took the 5K Roughrider Run in 17:05.
"Jerry Schwartz was terrific," said Hollis Dietz, who is known in this area as the grandaddy of North Dakota road races.
50 years ago (1959): Current points leaders Johnny "The Bomb" Gartner, driving the Class A Chevrolet Covrette-powered Big Boy Special owned by Kenneth F. Landers, and Norm Schatz behind the wheel of Joe Kuntz's Class B Mercury-driven machine, will be trying to extend their points leads as Stock Cars Inc. of Bismarck take to Bill Kirchmeier Dacotah Speedway.
Other Class A drivers will be Curley Werner, Dave McGerran, Dale Orne, Lefty Herman and Roy Mindt and Leroy Martel. Car owners include Bill Schlosser.
