10 years ago (1997):Grand Forks Central goalie Jake Moreland heads the North Dakota all-state hockey team.

Moreland is the only unanimous selection for the team, which is picked by the coaches.

The first-team forwards are Ryan Kalbrener of Grafton-Park River, Grant Potulny of Grand Forks Red River and Casey McKenna of Bismarck. the defensemen are Grand Forks Red Rivers Mark Bry, North Dakota's Mr. Hockey, and Chad Dahlen of Devils Lake-Cando. Potulny, a junior, is the only underclassmen.

McKenna, who was the other Mr. Hockey finalist, is a 6-foot-1 190-pound wing. He scored 21 goals and added 13 assists for the state-tournament qualifying Demons.

His size, strength and shot allowed him to have a big year.

"He's just a real determined kid," Bismarck coach Jay Johnson said. "His physical strength and determination to succeed made him stand out."

Named to the second team were forwards Nat Hunter of Fargo South, Bret McBeain of Jamestown and Corey Gorder of Bottineau, defensemen Joey Markusen and Josh Ehli of Bismarck and goalie Mate Nomeland of Fargo North.

20 years ago (1987): JAMESTOWN (AP - Al all-state basketball team has quickness, size, good shooters and defensive-minded players. The same holds true for this season's North Dakota Class A high school all-state team.

The 11-member team, picked by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, has everything a coach could want.

It has quickness in 5-foot-11 Williston guard Mike Sailer. It has intimidating size in 6-9 Grafton center Mike Krajewski. It has god shooters in Grafton's Wade Herbel and Valley City's Justin Anderson. It has a solid defensive performer in Bismarck's Bob Upgren.

And the team has the state's Mr. Basketball, Jamestown's Bryan Flam.

Sailer, Herbel, Anderson and Flam were unanimous first-team selections. Upgren and Krajewski rounded out the first team.

Second-team members are Fargo South's Dave Glass and Jeff Benson, Dickinson's Jeff Braun and Troy Geiszler and Minot's Brian Nelson.

Upgren led Bismarck for most of the season before breaking his hand in the Western Dakota Association tournament. The 6-3 forward averaged 18 points and eight rebounds a game. He also added five assists per outing.

"He had a tremendous season," said Bismarck coach Dwite Gorder. "the nice thing about Bob was that he could play defense as good as anyone in the WDA and still play well offensively. I don't think anyone has worked harder for me. He has a tremendous work ethic."

50 years ago (1957): Amateur basketball champions will be named in both Class A and B divisions next year, officials of the North Dakota Amateur Basketball Association (NDABA) have decided.

The meeting during the state tournament involved NDABA executives, directors and district commissioners.

While two champs will be determined, a championship game also will be held between the two. Class A and B teams will play in their own brackets to final determination. During the past two seasons the divisions were intermingled in the quarterfinal rounds.

Officials aid the plan would be given a one-year trial.

They also sought to enhance the quality of basketball at the state tournament by allowing both A and B teams two pick-up layers each for the state event. Class A teams this season were allowed none and the B contenders only one each.

The association moved to eliminate the word "independent" and emphasize "amateur" regarding member teams.

The NDABA advised its commissioners to study plans for redistricting, which will be completed at the fall meeting.

Two rules were qualified: (1) No high school student will be allowed to play NDABA ball unless he is at least 20 years old, and (2) all protests to the NDABA must be filed either before the contest in question or at the time of the incident. The group said it would consider no protest which had been made after a game.
