10 years ago (1998):MINOT- Maverick Valandra scored only eight points in the Class B state basketball championship game, but the 6-foot-6 junior center was THE reason Standing Rock is the 1998 state champion.

The Warriors beat Leeds 59-50, giving them their first state title in 25 years.

"We wanted to make the point right away that we could win this game," Standing Rock co-coach Cole Higlin said.

Quinn Austin led Standing Rock with 18 points, while Felix Bradley added 13 and D.J. Two Bears chipped in 11 points. Jake Luger scored nine and Valandra finished with eight points. Austin finished off a double-double with 11 rebounds.

20 years ago (1988): Phil Mann of Hazen leads the Division 1 singles after the fifth week of the North Dakota state men's bowling tournament, held at Capitol Lanes.

50 years ago (1958): MINOT - Underwood and Kulm will clash for the North Dakota state Class B championship.

Underwood's Comets downed the Beach Bucs, 54-49, and the Kulm Gophers stopped the Bottineau Braves, 58-54, to advance to the final round.

Jim Martin paced the Comets with 23 points, while Gary Thompson netted 20 for Beach.

Ron Sandau paced the Gophers with 18 points and Gary Berg had 23 for Bottineau.

In consolation play, John Butterfield scored 30 points as Hettinger stopped Minot Model.

Mitchell scored 19 for Carrington, which fell to Ellendale. Curt Neumann scored 26 points for the winners.
