Marlyn Seidler has this to say about winning:It gets sweeter as he gets older.
The 55-year-old driver from Underwood wrapped up yet another IMCA Modifieds points title Friday night with a feature victory at the Mandan Dacotah Speedway's season championships.
Seidler, who captured a points title at Mandan in 2006 and finished a close second in 2007, came into the night with a 14-point lead over defending champion Mark Dahl of Bismarck.
"To finish first in points, I just had to make sure Mark didn't finish 15 spots ahead of me in the feature," Seidler said. "But I didn't want to do it that way. …. I wanted to win it. I tell you this is nice. When you're my age, it just gets better and better the feeling you get when you're the first to cross that finish line. It's always good knowing that I can still do this. There aren't a whole lot of gray hairs in that pit area."
Seidler started the 25-lap final in the fifth row and gradually moved through the pack. He was in fifth place by the ninth lap and in third by the 13th. One lap later, Seidler passed Leo Burkhardsmier of Bismarck for second place, but still trailed frontrunner Drew Christianson of Minot by almost a quarter of a lap.
However, Christianson was clearly experiencing mechanical trouble. His car started to leave a trail of smoke on the sixth lap, and it got worse as the race progressed. Then midway through the 19th lap, the car lost power, opening the door for Seidler.
"(Christianson) was way ahead of the rest of us and it was looking real good for him, but I wasn't too concerned. … I felt I was either going to catch him or at least make it close," Seidler said. "It's too bad what happened to him. He was doing so well, but that sort of thing happens in racing."
Seidler led the final six laps, holding off Dahl and Burkhardsmier, who came in second and third, respectively.
Seidler won points titles at Mandan, Minot and Dickinson in 2006, and at Minot and Dickinson in 2007. He was second at Mandan last season, finishing just six points behind Dahl.
He's faring well again at all three tracks this season. He's in second place behind Hank Berry of Sidney, Mont., going into tonight's finale at Minot's Nodak Speedway. Berry holds a 17-point advantage.
Seidler has visited Dickinson's Southwest Speedway only eight times this season, but has won six features.
"I'm in the top 10 at Dickinson, but way out of first place," Seidler said. "We didn't get there as often this year, mainly due to some scheduling conflicts. But we did well just about every time we made it there. As for Minot, I had one DNF (did not finish) and that hurt. Berry got 19 more points than I did that night, and that's been the difference. It's going to be awfully tough to make up that difference in one night, but if it doesn't happen, I'd be OK with second place."
Craig Ohlhauser took top honors in the 15-lap Hobby Stocks feature and in the process, picked up his second straight points title. The Mandan driver, who started in the fourth row, took the lead on the fifth lap and stayed there the rest of the way. Scott Gartner of Bismarck came in second.
Spencer Johnson of Jamestown finished third in the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stocks feature, but captured his first points title at the Mandan track. The win went to Bismarck's Randy Meyer, who pulled into the lead with three-plus laps to go.
John Feist of Bismarck led after the first three laps, but mechanical trouble forced him to leave the track. Then Bismarck's Nate Keena ran ahead of the pack until Meyer passed him on the high side of the third turn on the 17th go-round. Keena settled for second place.
Johnson won the points title by 10 over Rusty Kollman of Carrington. Johnson came into the night just four points out of second place in the national standings.
Spencer Wilson of Minot put the finishing touches on a championship season with a victory in the Legends feature. Wilson came into the night with a 28-point lead over Wilton's Nathan Speten, who wound up finishing second in Friday night's final.
Wilson and Speten are currently 1-3 in the Legends National Pro points standings. Nathan Speten's brother Troy, also of Wilton, is the points leader in the National Semi-Pro division.
Four cautions and a red flag - due to a collision - forced an early end to the 12-lap Thunder 4's feature. The time limit had already expired when the fourth caution was called during the 10th lap. Brandon Heimann of Bismarck was declared the winner, but Matt Dosch of Bismarck sewed up the points title with a second-place finish.
Shawn Volk of Bismarck and Nick Keena of Baldwin, who were 2-3 in points, were disqualified because of unsportsmanlike conduct.
