MINOT-In the end, seeding positions meant very little in team play at the West Region boys tennis tournament on Thursday.

Top-seeded Minot played to form and won the title. But the Magicians played No. 6 Williston for the championship, winning 3-2.

Joining Minot and Williston at next week's state tournament in Bismarck will be fourth-seeded Bismarck and No. 7 Dickinson.

Bismarck downed second-seeded Century 3-2 in one state qualifier and Dickinson edged Jamestown 3-2 in the other. Bismarck qualified as a team for the first time since 2001.

Century opened with a 3-2 win over Dickinson, but fell 3-2 to Williston in the semifinals. That left the Patriots paired with archrivals Bismarck with a state tournament berth on the line.

SeanCleary and Grant Bakke gave Bismarck two-set victories in singles, and Matt Kramer and Chris Alveshere eked out a three-set win in doubles to boost the Demons into the state tournament. Kramer and Alveshere edged NathanLo and Michael Bjork 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Minot, undefeated in seven regular season regional matches, swept the three singles matches to defeat Williston in the championship matches. Josh Oothoudt, Kyle Bangen and Hunter Oothoudt all won in two sets for the Magicians.

Williston captured both doubles matches in two sets.

The fact that seeding positions didn't hold up wasn't a complete surprise. Century, Mandan, Bismarck and Jamestown tied for second place in the regional dual standings. That necessitated use of a tiebreaker formula to determine seeding positions.
