Welcome back to professional rodeo, Jason Lawrence.
The Washburn cowboy let his permit go a little more than two years ago. He bought it back this summer and is back at it.
Lawrence was the top finisher Saturday in steer wrestling at the Mandan PRCA Rodeo, the finale of the three-day event. Lawrence clocked a time of 4.0 seconds for top honors.
Josh Graff of Ainsworth, Neb., was the overall winner with a time of 3.3, which was clocked Friday night.
"When a 3.3 is winning a rodeo, things have to happen in a hurry," Lawrence said. "Everything has to be perfect. It's exciting. Anytime you see a 3.3 at a rodeo, you want to show up there and be a 3.2. It gets your competitive juices flowing."
Lawrence, originally from Promise, S.D., took a few years off from pro rodeoing after he got married and moved with his wife to Washburn. He works on the family ranch and farm.
"We work on the farm Monday through Thursday, Friday on the farm and ranch at home,"Lawrence said. "This is our time off, our hobby. We do it for fun. We enjoy doing it."
During his time off, Lawrence was also training a horse for tie down roping. He finished with a no time earlier Saturday night. His no time in tie down roping didn't break his confidence for steer wrestling.
"Rodeo is a very humbling game,"Lawrence said. "You can show up and win one rodeo, and the next rodeo you go to everything can fall apart. You have to have a really good short-term memory. If things go bad, you have to pick your head up, leave it at the arena and go on to the next one."
Lawrence said his time of 4.0 was an average run for him.
"You take what you get and go to the next one,"he said. "I had a good steer. He was just a little slower handling. Overall, it was a pretty good run. I'm happy with it."
Jessica Routier of Buffalo, S.D., took over top honors in barrel racing with a time of 14.95. Britany Fleck of Mandan came within an eyelash of sharing top honors with a 14.96.
Routier and Fleck bested Joey Painter of Buffalo, S.D., who clocked a 15.11 Thursday morning.
Fred Boettcher of Rice Lake, Wis., and B.J. Schumacher of Hillsboro, Wis., both turned in an impressive performance in bull riding with scores of 84. Their efforts weren't good enough to top Bobby Loren Welsh of Gillette, Wyo., who scored an 86 on Friday.
Tigh Anderberg of Mobridge, S.D., put on a good show on Saturday with a score of 83 in bareback riding. Anderberg tied Scott Montague of Rapid City, S.D., for the best overall score.
Blake Huckabee of Shreveport, La., won Saturday's event in tie down roping with a time of 9.1 seconds. Huckabee was unable to best Resaca, Ga., cowboy Tim Pharr's time of 8.5, which was set on Friday.
Riley Knoll of Mandan rode War Woman in the saddle bronc for a top score of 70. Brody Bolton of Odessa, Texas, was the overall winner with a score of 78, set during Friday night's performance.
