Blake Selisker's final volleyball performance at the West Fargo High School gymnasium couldn't have gone much better Tuesday night.
The West Fargo standout, who is heading to MSU-Moorhead to play volleyball, earned most valuable player honors, guiding the East all-star seniors to a 3-2 win over the West during the first night of the North Dakota Optimist's all-star series.
"That was a blast," said Selisker, who recorded an all-star record 25 digs while producing eight kills and three service aces.
Selisker's final ace gave the East a 14-10 lead in the fifth and final game. The match ended when the West returned a errant pass on Selisker's final serve.
The East, which won the first two games 25-20, 25-23 before losing 25-22 and 25-10, improved its record to 23-14 in an all-star series that dates back to 1990. The West, which had won six of the previous 10 matches, will try to rebound tonight when the two teams will play at Century High School.
For Selisker, it was another chance to play with West Fargo teammate Jessie Gust, who led the East with 14 assists.
"Me and her connect so well," Selisker said of Gust, last year's North Dakota Gatorade player of the year, who doesn't plan to play college volleyball. "If she did play, I wish she were on my team."
Selisker wasn't the only East all-star to set a record. Megan Storstad of Grand Forks Red River, who plans to throw the javelin for the University of North Dakota track team, also came up with a record 25 digs. The previous dig record of 21 was set in 2003 by Century's Sarah Korte.
Two other East players equaled Selisker's eight-kill output. Fargo North's Kelsey Larson, who plans to play volleyball and compete in track at Northwest Missouri State, had eight kills, as did Lisbon's Veronica Munkeby, who plans to play volleyball at the University of North Dakota.
"All the girls connected with each other pretty quickly," Selisker said.
There were two main reasons Concordia volleyball coach Tim Mosser was among the big crowd at West Fargo High School. He watched two of his recruits lead the West's hitting attack.
Dickinson Trinity's Breanna Messer had 13 kills while Kenmare's Stephanie Barnhart had seven kills. The two will not only get to see more of Selisker tonight, but this fall when MSU-M and Concordia play.
"That will be a lot of fun," Messer said of playing at Concordia. "And it was tons of fun tonight."
Munkeby and Minot's Brianna Kraft were named winners of the Optimist's Club $500 scholarships, given annually to two of the participants of the all-star series.
