Five years ago, Derek Dippon weighed nearly 200 pounds and wasn't into running or any other form of exercise.

On Saturday, the 32-year-old Cedar, Minn., resident was the overall winner in the 24th annual Bismarck YMCA Marathon.

"Back then, I was overweight and inactive, and I figured I had better do something about it before it got worse," Dippon said. "I lifted weights and rode a bike, and about three years ago I started running. Now I'm running marathons."

Five years and eight marathons later, the 5-9 Dippon is a lean and healthy 145 pounds.

"I made a commitment to get healthier," he said. "It became a passion. It still is."

Dippon crossed the finish line at Pioneer Park in 2:43.18, which was about 10 minutes slower than the time he was hoping for.

"I was shooting for a 2:33, but I didn't have it in me today," he said. "The warm weather definitely had an effect on me. It would have been more ideal if it were 30 degrees cooler.

"I was starting to hurt at about the eight-mile mark and I was starting to cramp up halfway through, but I couldn't let up. I had to gut it out most of the way."

Still, Dippon dominated the race. The second-place runner, Dave Cleveland of Fraser, Col., came in 14 minutes and eight seconds later.

"I was about a mile ahead at the halfway mark, but in a marathon, a mile lead with 13 miles to go isn't safe," he said.

Denise Wiseman of Bismarck was the first woman to go the distance. She posted a time of 3:28:12, which qualified her for the Boston Marathon.

"I came in with two goals. … To win the women's overall and and to run a 3:20," said Wiseman, who ran in her first Boston Marathon last year. "I didn't get the time I wanted, but winning the women's overall is exciting."

Allison Germolus of Bismarck (3:35:39) came in second.

In the half-marathon, defending champion Chad Wallin of Minot made it two in a row, outdistancing Bismarck's Scott Reichenberger by nearly two minutes. The Twin Falls, Idaho native and former Minot State University standout broke the tape at 1:12:50, which was nearly two minutes faster than last year's winning time.

"The goal was to go under 1:13," said Wallin, who is now an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Minot State. "I really pushed it the first mile and just gradually pulled away. I felt good the whole way."

Wallin ran in his first Bismarck YMCA Marathon last year and liked it.

"It's a good flat course, and it's spectator friendly," he said. "And this is a well-run event. I enjoy being here."

Reichenberger finished in a time of 1:14:29 and Andy Nielsen of Bismarck followed at 1:19:59.

Bismarck's Janelle Olson, who was running in her first Bismarck YMCA Marathon, won the women's title with a record time of 1:19:17. The old record stood for 20 years.

"I didn't go in looking to break any records. … I just wanted to run a good race," said Olson, who finished third overall behind Wallin and Reichenberger. "It's nice to do something like that. I'm happy with the effort."

Last year's champion, Marnie Walth of Bismarck, was second (1:26:58) in the women's division and sixth overall.

A total of 112 runners finished the half-marathon and 80 finished the marathon.

On Friday night, Becky Ziegler and Pete Welk, both of Bismarck, were inducted into the Bismarck YMCA Marathon Hall of Fame.
