After looking sharp in an 11-point win over the Class B all-stars Tuesday in Bismarck, the Class A team spent most of Wednesday night frustrated.
Class B clogged the Class A transition game and kept their posts from getting comfortable in the paint in a 77-68 win at the Fargo Civic Center.
"We came out with a lot of energy tonight and took away their strengths," Class B coach Kent Harding of Bowman County said. "We put pressure on their perimeter shooters and played a lot better on defense."
Class A post Mara Paulson of Fargo Shanley, who was held to two points, could tell early on it was going to be a much different game.
"They came out like they wanted to win right away, and we got caught on our heels," Paulson said.
LaMoure's Jada Meikeljohn led Class B with 13 points.
Class A was led by Andi Wheeler of Grand Forks Red River, who tossed in 14 points. Mandan's Marlee Finley had 11 and Kylie Messer of St. Mary's 10.
Class B built an early lead playing aggressive on defense and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Unlike on Tuesday in Bismarck, Class B limited Class A's second-chance opportunities.
"You could tell we were more comfortable and made better shots from the perimeter," Harding said. "We also limited their shots on each possession, which was big."
The inspired effort led Class B to take a 47-40 lead at the half.
Class A tied the game at 48 when Kristen Anstadt of Fargo South hit a layup with 15:25 left.
Class B rebounded and took the lead as Grafton's Samantha Baldwin hit two field goals and added a free throw.
Again Class A came back to tie the game, 54-54, but Class B refused to give up control the game or the lead.
Munich post Brittany Wirth connected for three consecutive field goals in three possessions to give Class B a six-point cushion.
"I knew I had to step up and make things happen," Wirth said.
The cushion was inflated when Killdeer's Tana Trotter added two more field goals in the paint giving her team a 64-54 lead with 7:33 left to play.
While Class B's posts began to thrive late in the game, Class A's continued to struggle and work for every field goal in the face of stingy defense.
"I thought we did a lot better job stopping their posts," said Kristen Killoran of Maple Valley, who finished with 12 points and four rebounds. "I don't feel like we were prepared for them in Bismarck."
With 2:50 left, Class A trimmed the Class B lead to 70-65 courtesy of a 10-foot jumper and a pair of free throws by Vittoria Poole of Minot.
Finley added a free throw to cut the lead to four, but that is as close as they would get.
Cristin Haase hit a 3-pointer with 46 seconds left to seal the win and make it 75-66 in favor of Class B.
"They carried over what they did well at the end of the first game and put pressure on our guards," Class A coach Greg Amundson of Mandan said. "They were in sync and we just never got in rhythm."
The girls series has fallen into a pattern. For the third straight year the Class Agirls won inBismarck and the Class B girls won in Fargo.
Last summer Class A triumphed 68-57 in the Capital City before falling 67-61 in Fargo.
