10 years ago (1998):Standing Rock was in a zone in the second half of the District 11 boys basketball championship game at Mandan HighSchool.

And what a zone it was.

The Warriors' zone defense frustrated Glen Ullin's slowdown offense in the second half, holding the Rattlers without a field goal in the fourth quarter, and leading to a 57-44 victory.

Maverick Valandra led Standing Rock with 13 points, while D.J. Two Bears added 10 and Felix Bradley chipped in nine points.

Brandon Schirado led Glen-Ullin with 13 points, while Jesse Voth tallied nine.

20 years ago (1988): In one sweeping motion, Tracy Hinsz took all the air out of the Civic Center. And the St. Mary's Saints.

A 12-foot hook shot by Hinsz with one second left in overtime lifted the Demons to a breathless 49-47 win over St. Mary's in the semifinals of the Western Dakota Association basketball tournament.

"It's the type of shot that wins games like this," said Russ Ferrie, St. Mary's coach. "We would let him shoot that one 10 more times."

Troy Hartmann led the Demons with 15 points, while Hinsz and Jeff Peterson added 10 each. Hartmann finished off a double-double with 10 rebounds, while ChrisWood chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.

Scott Gunderson scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Saints, while Ken Kraft added 17 points and eight rebounds.

50 years ago (1958): Bowman and Hettinger will battle for the District 16 boys basketball title, both having won in semifinal action.

Both teams are in the regional tourney because of the wins, however. Bowman took Abbey for a 50-32 ride and Hettinger picked up its 49th straight win in a 61-33 tilt with New England.

Three players hit in the double figures for Bowman, while Ralph Zainhofsky led Abbey with 10.

John Butterfield poured in 23 to lead Hettinger and Roger Erickson led New England with 14.
