Randall Herbst will become the sixth head men's basketball coach at the University of Mary, the school announced on Wednesday.

Herbst will be formally introduced today at an 11 a.m. press conference at Chick's Place on the U-Mary campus.

He will succeed former head coach Juno Pintar, who stepped down after this past season.

Herbst was one of three finalists. Mike Heideman, who once coached Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Pete Stewart, the head coach at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash., were the other two finalists.

U-Mary received around 100 applications when the position came open.

Herbst was an assistant coach at Nebraska-Omaha for the past two years.

He has been associated with several successful programs. He was an assistant at North Iowa Community College, Lincoln Memorial and the University of North Dakota.

Herbst was the head coach at Waldorf Junior College from 1998-2000.

Fritz Fell started U-Mary's program during the 1970-71 season and coached for three years. Fell compiled a record of 33-37.

Al Bortke headed the program from 1973-1989 and ran up a mark of 335-157 before becoming the school's first athletic director. Rod Jonas succeeded Bortke and coached from 1989-95. Jones finished with a career record of 68-86.

Jim Feeney coached the Marauders from 1995-2004 with U-Mary's last conference title coming in 1997. Feeney's teams combined for a 112-86 record. Pintar collected a 55-88 record and helped the Marauders transition to NCAA Division II from the NAIA.

The Marauders finished the 2008-09 campaign with a record of 7-20 and 5-15 in the Northern Sun to finish 12 out of 14 teams.
