Jake Hruby was a gem on the diamond Friday for the Bismarck Reps.

The right-hander tossed the first perfect game of his life, leading Bismarck to a five-inning 10-0 win over Minot in the first round of the North Dakota Senior Babe Ruth baseball tournament.

Bismarck plays Fargo today at 11:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to Sunday's state championship game.

Hruby struck out six, had three assists and two putouts. And he was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored. He attacked Minot with his glove, bat and arm.

"I think I threw one curveball all game," said Hruby, who now has two no-hitters to his credit. "I don't throw really hard, so I just locate. Coach told me to go throw strikes."

Hruby obliged, fanning the first two batters he faced to set the tone for the game. He single-handedly closed out Minot, striking out two and catching a soft liner in the fourth, then striking out another and getting two come-back groundouts in the fifth.

"They weren't that hard hit," Hruby said. "It was just routine baseball, and you have to field your position as well as throw strikes."

Things couldn't have started worse for Minot, which went out 1-2-3 in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the first, Bismarck's leadoff hitter, Tyler Peterson, popped up on the infield but pitcher Shane Sessions dropped the ball. First baseman Justin Schroeder picked it up and threw it down the first-base line, allowing Peterson to go to third. He then scored on Jon Herold's double.

That was the only scoring until the Bismarck third when the Reps jumped on Sessions for eight runs.

Peterson reached on a bunt single, stole second, stole third on a delayed steal and started a flood of runs on Hruby's two-run single.

Matt Chuppe followed with a two-run single, and a rash of errors kept things rolling for Bismarck.

Peterson was 1-for-2 with a walk, reached on an error and scored three runs.

"He's an incredible athlete, and he's fun to watch on the basepaths," Bismarck coach Mike Gustavsson said. "We've got him in that perfect spot, the leadoff batter, the crafty guy who can get you some extra bases."

In the middle of the scoring outburst, Jason Holzer violated the cardinal rule of baseball when he told Hruby he had a perfect game.

"He jinxed me, but I knocked on wood and kept throwing strikes," Hruby said.

Bismarck went to the fifth needing one run to put the 10-run rule into effect.

Hruby led off with a double before Sessions struck out pinch-hitter Nick Bury and Justin Dauenhauer. Pinch-hitter Silas Standing Elk then singled to left, scoring Hruby.
