To all University of Mary football fans:there's a new insight available about the team this fall.
All of that is going to come courtesy of Brady Martin, a returning wide receiver.
Martin will be offering his outlook on U-Mary's upcoming season by blogging for the Tribune. Martin's blog isn't set up yet, but it should be up and running this week. We will make sure to provide you with a link when his blog is activated.
We've asked Martin to blog for us at least three times a week. He will offer a look at upcoming opponents and give his thoughts after games. Martin can blog everyday or several times a day if he chooses.
Asking Martin to dedicate that much time is a tall order. The main thing I told Martin is to have fun with the assignment.
Coach Myron Schulz chose Martin to share his thoughts, so I'm certain Martin will do a good job. Martin will be able to offer you a perspective that can't be found in the newspaper, seen on TV or heard on the radio.
Speaking of the Internet, U-Mary is in the process of redoing its Web site, and it should be up and running some time this fall.
Those who attended Media Day on Thursday got a glimpse of what the site will look like. The new site has a nice, clean look to it. For those who like to find information on the Internet, it appears the new site will be an improvement.
Here are just a few things that stood out while perusing through the Marauders' football guide:
n Of the opponents U-Mary plays this season, the Marauders have never lost to Upper Iowa, MSU-Moorhead or Northern State. They have never beaten Chadron State, MSU-Mankato, Minnesota-Duluth or St. Cloud State.
n Minnesota-Duluth, the defending national champ, is U-Mary's opponent on homecoming. Ouch!
n Schulz needs just one more win to reach 80 career victories. His overall record is 79-29.
n Former University of North Dakota standout Digger Anderson is no longer on the coaching staff. Anderson left for personal reasons. Gary Cooper, who was already on staff, will take over the inside linebackers now that Anderson is gone.
Jason Challeen was then brought back to his alma mater to coach the wide receivers. Challeen had coached the wide receivers at U-Mary in 1999-2000.
Since then, he's had coaching stops at St. Cloud State (Minn.), Southwestern College (Kan.), Minnesota-Duluth, Mesabi Range Community and Technical College (Minn.), Jamestown College and Wentzville (Mo.) High School.
Soccer kicks off at BSC
Let's switch gears.
Bismarck State will start its inaugural season of soccer on Thursday when players report to practice.
I asked athletic director Buster Gilliss if they have all their ducks in a row. He said:"We better have."
Gilliss said organizing a soccer team went smoother than planned thanks to the guidance of Mel Fischer, who is the director of soccer operations.
"Mel is thorough with everything," Gilliss said. "I assisted him in getting things taken care of. I couldn't have had a better person to work with than Mel to get the program off and running."
Gilliss is hoping the school can gain more than 40 student athletes with men's and women's soccer now being added.
The men open up their season Aug. 29 when they play host to Century College of White Bear Lake, Minn. The women play host to Rochester Community and Technical College on Aug. 30.
From the looks of BSC's schedule, which is posted online, the Mystics will play mostly Minnesota teams.
Softball a possibility?
The rumor mill has BSC adding women's softball.
"We've talked about it, but we have not made a commitment,"Gilliss said. "We want to get soccer off and running before we dive into another sport."
If BSC was to add soccer, the school would offer one more women's sport than men's.
"I don't think that would present a problem," Gilliss said.
Adding softball could possibly bring in 20 more student athletes to BSC.
Travel costs shouldn't be huge. The softball players could travel with the baseball team to most games.
"It's something we're exploring, but we're not at the serious stage right now,"Gilliss said.
