RODEO: Montague likes broncos over bikes

Scott Montague of Rapid City, S.D., should just stick with riding bucking bareback broncos.

They seem to be safer than other modes of transportation, like a 10-speed bicycle.

The cowboy entered the Mandan Rodeo on Thursday concerned about his shoulder. Montague is in the process of recovering from a Grade 2 separation that occurred about five weeks ago while riding bike.

"It was one of those old-school 10-speeds that had the curved handle bars, and I thought I could ride that," Montague said. "I thought if I could ride a bucking horse, I could ride a 10-speed. Evidently, I'm not as handy as I think. It was wet and rainy out, and I tried to turn, the tire slipped and fell over. The bike was too big for me in the first place."

Montague, who leads the Badlands Circuit in bareback, put on a show during Thursday night's performance. Montague turned in a score of 83 on a bronc named Moon Blast to lead the event.

John Addison of Belvidere, S.D., and Dustin Reeves of Owanka, S.D., also turned in impressive rides. Addison scored 81 and Reeves 80.

The rodeo continues through Saturday.

Montague said he has ridden Moon Blast a handful of times and has always had good luck on the horse.

"He's a good little horse, for Mosbrucker," Montague said. "I see a lot of guys mess him up because he's so fast. He's not a typical Mosbrucker horse. A Mosbrucker horse is usually a little stronger and not as fast as that. I knew what I was getting into coming up here because I've been on him a bunch. I'm one of the only guys who gets along with him."

Montague said he became concerned after watching Addison and Reeves ride.

"When you're one of the first guys out, the judges tend to forget about you," he said. "Luckily, in this case, they knew I had a little better horse than they had."

Even though Montague leads the Badlands Circuit, he's cut back on rodeos this summer to focus on his family's business and to spend more time with his 18-month-old daughter, Aspen. He said he will pull out of the Killdeer Rodeo today because he won in Mandan.

"I'm not planning on going to as many bigger ones like I used to,"Montague said. "When you going hard, you don't make any money."

Montague plans to rodeo in Belle Fourche, S.D., and Mobridge, S.D., on Saturday. He plans to take it easy on Sunday and spend time at the lake.

Jason Thorstenson of Hermosa, S.D., won Thursday night's tie down roping in 9.70 seconds. Tyler Fagerhaug of Wessington, S.D., turned in a time of 8.8 seconds in the Thursday morning slack performance to lead the event overall.
