10 years ago (1998):ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Mandan American Legion baseball team ran its winning string to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Aberdeen, winning 10-3 and 8-7.

In the first game, Joe Schneider was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Jon Arenz was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Mitch Raile and Jaden Bitz each had a run-scoring double, while Tracy Geffre had a two-run double. Andy Banning picked up the win.

In the second game, Mike Crouse was 2-for-3 with the game-winning run batted in, while Ron Bethke and Arnez each went 2-for-3 as well. Raile and Schneider connected on triples, while Ryan Crouse picked up the win and Arenz the save.

20 years ago (1988): A track team, an undefeated basketball team and a highly-successful Class A coach highlight the females' high school awards selected this year by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Chris Hoper, who led Beulah to the state Class B track championship, was named athlete of the year.

Esmond-Maddock capped a perfect season with a state Class B basketball championship, and was named team of the year for that feat.

And Larry Moser, who coached Devils Lake to his second Class A basketball championship in the past four years, was named coach of the year.

Hoper scored 40 points by herself in the state track meet by winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, as well as the 300 hurdles.

Hoper's team-orientated attitude was no secret to her coach, Tom Petrik, a former Bismarck High and University of North Dakota star.

50 years ago (1958): The Fargo American Legion Junior baseball team ran its victory string to 16 straight at the expense of the Bismarck Juniors. It was also the fourth time this year the locals have been turned back by Fargo.

Fargo romped to an 11-3 win behind the four-hit hurling of Terry Bradford and Ed Kelly, while the visitors were raking Steve Woodcox for 10 hits, including home runs by Jim Bell and Kelly.

Gordon Postovit homered for Bismarck and John Gallagher shook Bradford for a triple. Otherwise, save for singles by Tom Hall and Woodcox, the Bismarck bats were silent.
