MINOT - Having a short memory can be a blessing in the consolation bracket of a state tournament.

Defending state champion Fargo South put the disappointment of a 3-0 first round loss behind it and efficiently defeated St. Mary's 3-0 in Friday consolation action at the state Class A volleyball tournament.

With the win, South moves onto today's fifth-place game. The Bruins will meet Fargo North, a 3-1 winner over Williston in Friday's other consolation game. St. Mary's plays Williston for seventh place at 10 a.m. at the Minot State Dome.

South senior Katie Lee, who had a game-high nine kills, said the Bruins had plenty of motivation, their Thursday loss to Bismarck notwithstanding.

"We wanted to redeem ourselves from yesterday," said Lee, a 5-10 hitter. "We didn't play very well yesterday, and we wanted to show everyone how we could play. ¦We came out and did our best and played our hardest."

St. Mary's was unable to sustain the competitive fire it displayed in Thursday's 3-0 opening loss to West Fargo.

"To be honest, I couldn't tell you what happened today," Saints coach Kari Leier said. "¦ It didn't matter what combination we used, it just wasn't working."
